It's highly possible to solo mage. Any barrows armor should work, although guthans is by far the most efficient. Just get a suicider to lure prime and supreme in the northwest corner, and you stay in southeast corner and mage rex.

Ive heard maging in veracs is much better. More prayer and magic bonus than guthans, I just need 80+ def and 70+ prayer now, I have all the items ready =)

Guthans is better because you use less Sara Brews. With Verac's, you usually have to take about 7-12 or so brews to stay down there longer. With Guthan's there is not as much of a new for brews because you heal on spynolps.

Guthans spec isnt as reliable and you have to bring more super restores (which cost 4x as much as sara brews)

Veracs with slayer dart is very good. Super restores, sarra brews, antis, and some sharks for emergency(your choice) is a good setup. I believe the Guardians of Fate have a good guide and so would Slayers of Dangerous Beasts. They are everywhere on these forums.
