My computer being loud as heck

Well see I brought this computer about 9 months ago. It's an eMachines model and I thought it was pretty quiet because it barley made any sound (My old computer made a constant humming noise).

Anyway, a few months later, in December or so, I noticed that every few minutes, the computer seems to get very loud (I thought it was the fan) it gets loud from time to time while I play this certain game, and it was almost unbearably loud (I learned to kinda deal with it later on but still annoying)

So it makes this LOUD whining noise. My cousin could hear it over the phone and all. Now, it gets loud as hell every time I try to do ANYTHING. For example, on the task manager, the CPU usage, when it gets over 70% it makes that sound.

It starts to get loud every time I move the window, try to scroll in ANY window, and wrost of all, it makes that sound constantly as I play Runescape, only stopping for like 3 seconds before continuing. :ohnoes:

So now I can barley focus in game or anything. Does anyone have any suggestions to what MIGHT be wrong with it? At first I thought it could be the fan, but the air coming out of it is the same when it's quiet as when it's loud.

Then, reading a similer topic in this forum, I heard someone suggest to the topic starter that it could be the CPU spinning quickly, and that worried me more. :uhh: :ohnoes:

So uhhh what do I do? Does anyone have a hypotheses? :o :o :o

A few obvious things you can do here, obviously before you do anything power the machine off and remove the power lead.

Take the lid off the machine and hoover out all vents and fans. Be careful not to damage anything and be aware that you don't suck up any jumpers on the motherboard. Usually cleaning the fans with a small brush and hoover is enough, as the fins on the fan gathers dust making them lop sided and then they rattle while spinning.

The two most common fans to make a noise are the CPU fan and the one on the graphics card (If your GPU has one that is). If cleaning them doesn't solve the problem then replace them. They aren't expensive.

The reason it gets louder when doing something intensive on the machine is because your BIOS is set to spin the fans faster when temperatures increase. This is perfectly normal and your machine has always done this, only the fans were quieter before and you never heard it.

Another source of noise (aside from CPU fans, GPU Fans and any other fans you care to mention) are the Hard Drive and CD/DVD ROM.

When you play your game (i dont know what game it is, you didn't mention it...) you use the CD/DVD Drive, which usualy makes a bit of a whine.

When your computer uses up all of its RAM (when your CPU is 70% or higher this is likely) is uses part of the hard drive as 'extra RAM'.

Both of these scenarios, make a fair bit of noise and are completely normal, however; if the noise changes from a low whine to a loud grinding noise (epically on the Hard Drive) it may be due to a partial or full failure of the device. (in sort grinding noise = bring to repair, whine = normal)

to help reduce noise from these components:

1. Make sure the drives are securely fastened to the drives' brackets (vibration from the drives operation sometimes loosens the screws)

2. Do a nice job vacuuming the insides for dust and other junk, use compressed air (about $20 for 3 at a local computer shop)

3. add sound damping material between the drives and there brackets, don't go overboard as overheating may occur

4. if the whine is still as loud as when you began, then contact gateways customer support

Never argue with an idiot - it only drags you down to there level, where he then beats you with experience.

Actually, most newer games are installed fully to the hard disk. You only need to put the cd in to start up the game because of a copy protection check. If it were reading stuff of the cd the game would be a lot slower.

If the game does need to read file off the cd to play then it would make noise like you said.
