  3. i think the pinguins are using the ducks as a way to attack the world when we least expect it (or to spy on us :ohnoes: )
  4. another good site is www.htmldog.com it has good tutorails and large refrence section. also www.google.com can be your friend in situations like that
  5. try reinstalling your audio drivers: 1. right-click my computer -> properties 2. click the hardware tab 3. click the device manager button 4. look for anything with a yellow circle with an exclamation mark, a red X or a yellow question mark 5. to update or reinstall a driver double click the device and select the drivers tab, then select update or install yellow circle --> problem with device --> reinstall drivers or update drivers red X -> device disabled --> simply right-click it and select enable yellow question mark --> unknown device --> install the drivers from the device's disk (or if your using a dell , hp,etc use there recovery disk) im guessing your audio card is just disabled tho.
  6. Wow those are nice.... *looks at price* HOLY @#%&!!
  7. Yes i know that i just want to know which companies have the least amount of trial software, so that i can clean it out as fast as possible
  8. I'm looking for a laptop before i go back to college, but i don't want to spend a weekend cleaning it from all that stupid trail software. What companies sell laptops WITHOUT the trial junk (or at least as little as possible)? Also, should I just go with a mac or go with Windows? The only thing that scares me from macs is the price ($1,200 + for laptops :ohnoes: )
  9. CPU Dual cores have, well, two cores. This allows them to act as two separate preprocessors (for multi-threaded programs) or act as one processor (for more basic programs). If a Dual-core is listed at 1.8Ghz, which is the clock speed, it will be just as fast as any other 1.8Ghz processor, only it can do two things at once! POWER SUPPLY As for your power supply, it will be picked by how much watts you need. Note these are estimations only, if doubt use the higher end of the range (Low end CPU < 1Ghz, high end CPU > 2.5 Ghz and/or dual core) Motherboard 15-30 Low-end CPU 20-50 Midrange to high-end CPU 40-100 RAM RAM 7 per 128MB PCI add-in card 5 Low to midrange graphics board 20-60 High-End graphics board 60-100 IDE hard drive 10-30 Optical drives 10-25 LINUX for all your Linux needs www.linux.org MONITOR CRTs are nitrous for poor image quality, burn-in, and can be damaged by magnets. However, they are cheep and in your case free. a graphics card may help but don't expect super clear high-def from it.
  10. Another source of noise (aside from CPU fans, GPU Fans and any other fans you care to mention) are the Hard Drive and CD/DVD ROM. When you play your game (i dont know what game it is, you didn't mention it...) you use the CD/DVD Drive, which usualy makes a bit of a whine. When your computer uses up all of its RAM (when your CPU is 70% or higher this is likely) is uses part of the hard drive as 'extra RAM'. Both of these scenarios, make a fair bit of noise and are completely normal, however; if the noise changes from a low whine to a loud grinding noise (epically on the Hard Drive) it may be due to a partial or full failure of the device. (in sort grinding noise = bring to repair, whine = normal) to help reduce noise from these components: 1. Make sure the drives are securely fastened to the drives' brackets (vibration from the drives operation sometimes loosens the screws) 2. Do a nice job vacuuming the insides for dust and other junk, use compressed air (about $20 for 3 at a local computer shop) 3. add sound damping material between the drives and there brackets, don't go overboard as overheating may occur 4. if the whine is still as loud as when you began, then contact gateways customer support
  11. I completely agree with all but one point of this article: "...then 80% of RuneScape's players are under 18. It would safe to assume that many of the players have never had a job because they are under the legal working age..." There are jobs out there for under-18-year olds(paper routs, fast food, stock person, etc) and most high schoolers (even a few grade schoolers) i knew had or have part time jobs. Anyway, to all the people who say "it's just pixels", can you give me your whip or dragon armor? After all it's just pixels. :)
  12. Please read my first post again. When I say yes to activate it, the screen pops up and it says this version is already activated. please read my post and see that it says to use the "Activate by phone" option
  13. Have you added any new hardware recently? if so you may have caused problems there is the fan on your power supply turning? Sometimes they (partly) fail and cause hardware and software problems is the power cable damaged? movement of a damaged cable may cause the system to go dead is the outlet the system plugged into having problems? to test try using other devices in it do you have a pesky two-year old brother/sister? if so keep them away from the shinny power button :D
  14. when you activate windows chose the activate by telephone option. dial the number and an automated system will ask for a long number displayed on your screen after that the system will give you a activation number to enter on the same screen this will only work if it a legit version of windows of course -.-

  17. a good tip for avoiding spam in the future is to set up a disposable email account with hotmail or yahoo basically its just an email account to send the initial email verification to so that you can finish the registration process
  18. no text or error codes on the BSoD :-k could be a graphics card failure... or some monitors turn blue when there is no signal... but that usually comes with a no signal warning check your monitor cable for damage and check to see if your graphics card is seated all the way
  19. Usually a cd tray will only close then open like that when theres something preventing it from closing all the way. make sure the cd is sitting flat in the tray and theres no debris in the drive (like rocks, marbles or anything bigger than dust but can fit into the drive). if theres nothing in the drive than look into replacing the drive.
  20. cool a computer user that admits to not knowing everything :) anyway, im not sure about putting movies onto an ipod (as i only have an ipod shuffle...) but im sure the video file has to go thru itunes. so if you can convert your videos to maybe a mpg or avi file type it may help
  21. Im gonna wait maybe another 1 to 2 years before i get vista my reasons 1. xp works just fine 2. most of the main problems in xp have support 3. all my stuff works in xp 4. vista basic is like $350 (alot for a guy that makes like $80 a week) 5. i dont need to upgrade 6. i may decide to get a mac anyways
  22. both spybot and ad-aware remove spyware, adware, keyloggers and other like malware. However, if you want top-notch protection from nasties you should have at least one anti-virus, one anti-spyware, and a good firewall Free examples AVG --> anti-virus Spybot , or ad-aware --> anti-spyware Zone alarm --> firewall (helps block incoming and outgoing signals, so junk may sneak in but won't send your password all over the net)
  23. Just a few questions: 1. do you use a router or hub to share your internet connection between 2 or more computers or do you have one computer directly connected to the modem? 2. Do you have any firewalls or Anti-virus software? (if you have windows xp or vista than you do have a firewall.) 3. Have you contacted your ISP (internet Service Provider)? 4. Are all of your cables firmly attached to there ports, without any significant damage? (plastic coating cracked, kink in the cable, borken tab on the connector, etc)
  24. Some ways to screw up autoers. Please note: some of these ideas are not practical to do in the long run but they all work! 1. Report them (duh) 2. Set a trail of items for them to a dangerous area (example: for WC autoers set a trail of yew/magic logs from the trees to any high level monsters nearby, the autoers will follow the items (picking them up along the way) to the monsters, get killed by the monsters, you pickup the items and repeat as many times as possible) 3. try and lead them into the wild and kill them 4. when an aggressive random appears (evil chicken and the like) use them as a flesh shield and range or mage the random. Feel free to add more ideas to deal wit autoers
  25. I piked my name from the first words from my work partner after he accidentally knocked a storm drain onto my hand him: "Umm... oops..sorry" me: *lots of things i cant type or ill get banned*
