The planets will be redone, those are just put in there so I can look at compostition... I'd say I'm about 40% done.... Time spent is about 3 hours so far. The black dots will be ships taking off from the little battle/explosion you see there... I also need some ideas on what details to add to the balcony... Right now I'm thinking about adding some plants and stuff... and of course detailing the handrail and stonefloor...

Everything done from scratch, and so far no references have been used... I plan to use one when I perfect the water, so I can get good reflections and stuff.... Full image is somewhere in the neighborhood of 3800x3200pixels...

Anyways, enough of me.. say something.. please... :)

the rail thingy.. you know the thing she's leaning on isn't interacting with the ground if you know what i mean it sort of seems sticked behind it but im sure you where planning on improving that

on the ground make some trees with a good interaction with that explosion there

the explosion and planets need some work tho, but you already said youll fix that so theres no point in saying it..

and the clouds dont look like clouds.. clouds only become that transparant if your really close to them in this case where not so its optical illusion

ill hold future comments for the finished version

I really like the railing, looks great. I think some of the other elements will come along soon. But there is one aspect I want to focus on considerably..the robe.

I can't believe I actually bought a book just on folds, but I did...and usually the garment hangs more or less straight from the hip unless it is a clingy garment. You might get some verticle folds, but not a lot of horizontal ones. In other words, the legs, usually having less volume than hips, would have some loose areas, but generally just fall strraight unless there is a reason for them to be pulled by another contact point. If that is the case it should contour a bit to the body.

For instance, check out this AWESOME painting here....

http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=201563

Now notice how the left side of her garment hangs down mostly straight, maybe a tad of curve in..but then around the...um...backside, it clings a bit to the protruding contact points.

This contact between points causes a slightly convexed slope.

Now if you have a lot of twisting you get some other folds..such as on her upper body. The anchor points on her chest pull the fabric causing the deeper folds around her side etc.

In other words....ther is no great reason I can see that you would have folds at mid leg in that pose. The actual shading of the folds look fine, but the placement is suspect. Now on the front there might be some reason for some folds, depending, but with the butt protruding there is a lot of space to drop more or less straight down. Now towards the ankles you might get some folds where it hits the ground etc.

Some more issues with the robe/cape.

The cape is seemingly at an angle, as if it were in the wind. Since it is longer than the figure we would expect it to be resting on the ground with some substantial folds on the ground. If it is to be at an angle then

a. It would probably be billowing out in the middle more from the wind

b. It might be at a more severe angle, not just an angle to the ground like that.

c. The hair should also reflect such a strong wind.

I assume that a huge wind is not the goal here so I would say most likely you need to put the cape at a different angle and have it cause folds as it hits the ground.

Yeah you're right about the shading on the body... I thought that was off a bit too... The cape is actually being "blown" a bit, and the hair (which is only about half finished) will eventually reflect it. It's just a slight breeze, but when the hair is done it will be evident.

Thanks for the railing comment, I didn't realize it until just now.

I think I overestimated a bit when I said 40% done... although I'm not trying to make this a masterpiece (just trying to get the grade, at this point) I agree that alof of things need to be fixed... So lets change the 4 to a 2... Haha...

Clouds aren't finished either...

It's a HE...

The explosion was just a throw together, that isn't the actual explosion.. Think of it as the same as the black dots with the white tails.. I just threw it on for placement.. This is due tomorrow and I have it saved on a school machine, so I won't be able to work on it until then... I don't think I can finish it in 2 hours but maybe I can get something together to get the teacher off my back.

How do you guys feel about colors of the different elements? Also, any ideas on how to get better mountain textures would be greatly appreciated... Umm I think that's about it... And (since I don't want to draw feet and sandals) I think I'm going to make the robe longer like you said tttia, and make it all bundled up at the ground... Uhh I think that's it for now... for real this time....

The robe is MUCH better. The cape still isn't working for me. If there is wind you won't have multiple folds, you will most likely have a bulge in the middle. with it smoothing to the sides. Overall though, vast improvement.

really good, if you going to have her hair blowing, i think there should be more of it, maybe a bit longer aswell, i think that her hair looks best not blowing, sumthing thats strange why i picked it, but i did, but here nose is a bit big/piggish, but its a really well excituted picture, oh and the "missiles"? they could really do with sum work, look really out of place, like black and white matchsticks

I see a pretty cool picture in the making :)

I'm only going to comment of the figure since thats what you seem to be mainly working on atm.

I've scribbled over a copy of your blue humanoid character to poke at things

....this computer is pants so I can only save as a rather poor quality jpg :?

scribble0rr.jpg

A = a bit I think ought to have darker shading in so it doesn't look like the robe goes out as far as the cape, right now, with the bulges in the cape it looks like the guys wearing a small ballroom dress.

B = Suspicious bulges. If the wind is blowing hard enough to cause the hair to fly out and the cape to be raised a little then its blowing hard enough to press the material of the robe over the figures body, right now it looks like hes slightly pregnant, or a woman. Mens hips don't (usually) look that prominent.

C = Another suspicious bulge, the flying edge of the robe looks uncomfortable (I use this word a lot) in this outward curve. It also adds to the hidden ballroom dress feeling. I think the capes edge should curve smoothly down from the point around the balcony top to the end rather than push outwards half-way.

D = Three elongated bulges in the cape which aren't necessary, a smooth darkish red throughout the cape with light shading to indicate a raised or lowered area would improve it enourmously.

The blown-out hair looks good and is a great improvement on the flattened down original.

I love the way the cape seems to rest around his shoulders, it gives me the idea of it being fastened out of sight by a cord instead of the usual way of having them inexplicably held to armour plates around here

The gold decoration on his shoulder looks a little odd, rather like tassels on a shawl, I think it would look better as shown by this not very detailed picture:

uniforms4jl.png

But that would give it a more militaristic appearance.

I think to lose the female aura you should make the dress/robe look something like a toga and/or bring it up to about ankle height to show male-looking footwear to emphasise it.

Heres a toga picture for quick reference:

Thats all my lot for now, hope it helps :)

Nice crits! Glad someone finally was NOT too lazy to mark.

A. I don't know, that is alright in my book.

B. Right on, that is what I was trying to say, it should fall straight. Right now it looks like a woman with TWO KNEES!

C. You got that right. In that case it would do one of two things...balloon out the middle or flip that side right around into a flap shape--which might give a more dramatic wind effect.

As for the fringe...I think militaristic is what is going on here...this is a general or a king watching the troops?

Togas are cool...but royal folks are too posh for that. Besides, when was the last time you saw a pale blue, pointy eared, long haird manly guy? Yeah, me neither.

Incidentally, this kind of post is what the media board SHOULD be. Makes me want a new smg. Not an smg..an art board. Open to everyone though.

Think I will post that .
