LOL I just ordered 8 gigs of ram for a new computer I'm building.

 

 

 

Ok, can anyone say overkill?

 

 

 

The 32bit versions of XP max's at 3gb (4gb will work , but it requires a lot of effect to get the system to recognise it) and Vista 4gb too (not sure 100% on vista). So for you to use 4gb+ gb of ram you have to use he 64bit versions of windows. When compared to the 32bit versions you have the a big problem with drivers (even getting some sound-cards to work takes a lot of effort) which is not good if you plan on gaming.

 

 

 

Not that the average gamer will not use more then 2gb effectively as no current games require it.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

As for the possible reason for having more then 2gb;

 

 

 

*3D work, I can understand the need as most 3D apps use masses of ram, but I can only understand having up to the 4gb mark.

 

 

 

*Gaming, as I stated before the current games don't require more then 2gb at the most, 4gb is understandable if you have the cash to burn, but 8gb why???

 

 

 

*Using it as a server, In my mind the only reason to have 8gb of ram.

I would NOT reccomend for vista over 4Gig of Memory MAX!

 

 

 

For windows probably 2-4Gig is a bit of an an overkill....

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

If your using that much Memory you have a problem.. What are you running like three or four world of war craft windows... But still your cpu is a huge thing.. If you have the cash for 8Gigs of Memory why not spend the spare cash on a quad core 3Ghz Pentium 4 processor? that would own your 8Gigs of memory on your Dual Core processor.. Lols.. Also upgrade your Mobo alot more too, If you have enough cash for 8Gig of memory i'm saying that you must have enough for a better Mobo and processor.. Plus it's probably DDR1 RAM or something lol.. First of all, all Pentium 4s are single-core. Not dual core. Not quad core. And I highly doubt anyone would get that much DDR RAM. :-s

Haven't you read other peoples posts? The pentium 4 processor is dead, it sucked. Why would somebody spend money on one of them? If you meant a core 2 duo quad then that would be a good idea.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

What makes you think hes getting crappy parts for the rest of his system? If he can afford 8gbs of ram, he's not going to cheap out on the other parts.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Why the hell would it be ddr1 ram? Drr1 sticks don't even come in 2gb sticks. In case you can't do the math, 2gb*4 memory slots=8gb.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Your trying to make fun of someone and trying to show of how much you know about computers but you realy don't know too much. I suggest you read up on all the new hardware out. You may have known a lot during the p4 era but not now, everything has changed.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Oh and who even said that Windows xp can't use over 3gbs is correct but only for the 32bit version. Same thing with Vista 32bit. It's a physical limitation of the 32bit code in the processor. The 64bit can use a lot more memory, like 100s of gbs or something outrageous. Vista then puts a software limitation of 24gbs in Ultimate.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

EDIT: Bartorom, there are dual core pentium 4s. They are called pentium D. They use the same exact core as the p4 with just 2 stuck together.

Yes, but I wouldn't consider a Pentium D to be a varient of a P4. That's why it's not called the Pentium 4 Duo. :-s

Who ever said I was using cheap parts on the rest of my system? I was given a budget for building a computer, and after getting pretty maxed out on other high end parts (core 2 extreme, 2 8800 gtx, etc) I didnt want to spend money on stupid things, like painted cases, so I got some more memory. This is the memory I got (2 kits of it) One other thing. While a 400 watt power supply would be ok for a normal computer, anyone planning on using high end graphics cards or big RAID arrays should get a much higher wattage supply. Skimping on the power supply could be the stupidest thing you could do to a computer. If you get a cheap one and it dies, theres a good chance its gonna take the rest of the computer along with it.
