Windows will not detect DVD drive

Well I'm having some problems with my DVD drive. It's not new, but it just would not show up in my computer one day.

I have tried un-installing the drive in device manager and have Windows re-install it, but it did not work. I searched google and it gave me this same advice.

I also thought that maybe the driver file was corrupted. So I copied the file from another computer running the same operating system and tried to install it but it said the device driver was up to date and would not install the new one.

I am running Vista 64-bit.

The problem is, Vista is having issues with many types of hardware and software, and until updated drivers are released for Vista, there may not be much to do.

Oh, and by the way, there is a slight chance that Service Pack 1 may alleviate this issue, however, it hasn't been released yet. The wait may be in terms of a few weeks, or even a few months... although I doubt it will be longer than that....

Hehe... well let's get into an argument about that now... but you could try unplugging the DVD drive, and then try plugging it back in, there could be a chance it works, but maybe not. And make sure you unplug the power from your CPU before you open it... no one wants to see you after you get jolted with electricity... :ohnoes:

Tried it. Thanks for your help anyway.

P.S. It shows up in the bios and device manager. My virtual drive using dameon tools will not work either so I'm thinking it may be a driver/ software issue.

Uninstall all burning software and Daemon Tools. Basically any software that has direct access to the drive/drivers.

Shutdown the computer properly (not hibernate/standby etc...)

Unplug the drive, start up windows.

Make sure no drivers are running for the devices.

Shutdown properly.

Plug it back in.

Start up windows and Vista "should" re-detect the drive(s) and install the drivers.

Restart and see if it worked.

Tis exactly what I'd do in that situation. Basic problem solving, so don't bite my head off if you've tried it already. :P

Another thing to try would be swapping the drive from another computer. If it works, it's the drive. If it doesn't, it's the software/drivers/OS/new update. Oh the fun...
