Does anyone know anything about the GIMP? Because I just downloaded, and I'm wondering if it is usefull for making pixelart, and if so, are there any tutorials for it? I've looked through the mainsite ones, they're mostly useless to me.

So yeah, cool, cool, cool tool!!! u can use it to make animated gifs, too... as long as u download a plugin. there should be a tutorial on the site, if not, do a google search for "gimp tutorials"... trust me, lots out there!!!! again, very nice tool, FREE too!

Well it can certainly be used to make pixels. Just be sure to pick the small one pixel pencil like tool, rather than the big fuzzy brushes.

It has layers so you can do pixels a bit easier. If you don't understand the layer concept type "photoshop layers" into google. It will explain how it works.

As was mentioned Gimp is much like a cheap man's photoshop. It can do a wide variety of art. The main factor is what brushes you use.

There are really very few advantages that programs can give you for pixeling. The only one that GIMP would have, as I mentioned, is layers. The more advanced features of GIMP are really used for photo retouching, brushing with transparency, effects, levels adjustments etc. None of those are needed for pixels.

I don't like the way they removed the little mini-windowed thing where you could see a list of all the layers and edit each one from it....

Makes manual animation more difficult :?

Confined space? Do you mean selecting a particular area to put a gradient in or just a small space that you want to put it in?

Like, if I made a box, and I wanted to gradient a brown color iside it, but only within the lines of the box, how would I do that? WHne I use the gradient tool, it fills the entire picture.

Ok....

This is the toolbar:

gimpthumb3qs.jpg

5th button along selects an area of the same colour e.g. if you draw a black outline of a box and click with this tool inside it it'll select the white space inside it.

Now whatever you do will only happen to that area.

Then get the gradient tool and drag it across the selected area with whatever gradient.

Doesnt matter if you drag the gradient line from outside the selected area because it will only put the gradient on the selected area.

To unselect the area to be able to work on the rest of the picture go to edit and click on select none.
