New Wave

Hey guys. This is not about movies (Nouvelle Vague) but music. Recentely I'm getting more and more interested in New Wave music. And with the recent revival of that type of music these days, it would seem interesting to open a topic about it.

In film this idea has always seem pretty clear to me, but in music I can't really seem to get what this is about. I mean, I really like the music and I can hear the style, but I can't really find the how and why and whatever. So I was hoping that some kind of discussion could bloom from this, so that I (and others) could be educated a little bit, and hear about some things I haven't heard before.

So far I've been listening to music from The Chameleons, Joy Division, The Comsat Angels, The Cure, The Smiths, Echot & The Bunnymen, The Sound, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, David Bowie, Duran Duran, Talking Heads/David Byrne, Blondie, and more recent stuff like Interpol and

Editors.

But I want to hear more, and know more about the style itself. Of course I could look all of this up at various websites, but it seems more fun to get to know it trough conversation with people on here, and maybe there are other people that could expand their horizons trough this topic.

I like more post-punk sound than New Wave, but the two are used interchangably alot. You pretty much named all my favourite bands from the genre, now including the Chameleons (thanks again).

As for defining the style... There's a really artsy element to it. Clever lyrics, lots of ambience and atmosphere. To me it's music that, like punk, rejects the mainstream and corporate elements of music, but does it with alot more finesse. I would call Joy Division the archetype of the sound.

The Psychedelic Furs, The The, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Inspiral Carpets and Suede are all good bands to check out. I especially recommend the album Life by The Inspiral Carpets, and Psychocandy by The Jesus and Mary Chain. Suede's self titled is also good.
