REDACTED
I am a Underground member in the internet world, and after serving 4 years to it i have learned the many ways you can keep your computer protected. And i would like to share what i know with you. Now some of you might already know this stuff, or be more knowledgeable than me, But i would still like to offer my advice, hopefully someone can use it :) Now i will talk allot in this thread, i just hope none of you start flaming me  Ok, First things first, If you are playing RS on either a Mac or Linux OS then you are not required to read this, I'm sure you know why  [hide=Anti-Virus Software] Get a good Anti-Virus program! I can not stress this enough to other people i talk to, even in real life. If you are a Runescape player and you use Nortan, or McAfee, then i suggest you uninstall those worthless pieces of junk right away. Get something like Kaspersky or NOD32. You want to stay safe don't you? And i am sure you want your system to run at it's full potential. NOD32 is perfect, it updates itself (even if your using a cracked version like myself) It doesn't use up as much system resources and it can take care of any malicious code/software effortlessly, just today it picked up a trojan on my PC and a good one for that matter, and all i had to do was click once and that was the end of that. If you are worried about cost, then, download it with a crack, simple as that. NOD32 and Kaspersky (I have used both) are so easy to use and so quick at tackling down Viruses.[/hide] [hide=How Your Information is Taken] If you ever wandered how Runescape information gets taken, then read this and learn how they work. The best step to protecting yourself is knowing what your up against. Keylogger : These are little applications (known as a server, when on the victims PC) Which will record your keystrokes/chat logs/web sites visited/passwords and then send them via E-mail or FTP (File Transfer Protocol) In most cases it will be the FTP, what then happens, is the person who set up the keylogger can then log into the web space, and download the logs. These logs can then either be opened in a web browser it's self or in the program it was created with (client) Trojan : You do not want these on your computer, These are deadly (in computer terms) A trojan is a keylogger + so much more... Some "hackers" will use a Trojan program such as PoisonIvy to create a package (server) which they then send to you. When you are online, the creator will be notified on the program (client). With a successful connection, they can see live screenshots, check the logs (in keylogger terms) and even uninstall software and download your files. They can take control of your PC, sounds scary huh? But with the right Anti-Virus programs you shouldn't need to fear. How it gets into your machine :Getting a keylogger/trojan server onto your PC really isn't all that hard. The hacker might be-friend you, gain your trust, then he/she might ask you to test something for them, and you accept the file. Other ways include from downloads from the web or with P2P applications like Limewire. As soon as you double click the [Caution: Executable File], it will "melt" into a folder, most commonly "C:\WINDOWS", where it then can either spread deeper into your machine or stay as it is, recording your logs or telling the hacker when you are online. Hopefully, if you have a decent Anti-Virus, it will pick it up, but this isn't always the case, There are further tools a "hacker" can use to make there deployable server undetectable, however those applications are hard to come by, and some don't even work. There are other terms and other tools a hacker can use, but i doubt you will run into those as long as you have the correct set up, which you can read bellow.[/hide] [hide=A guide to prevent them by AWCADDET] This is only a small guide, i will update in time. Internet Browser If you are using Internet Explorer, then you are very vulnerable to infiltrations via the many loop holes in the browser, Get Mozilla Firefox Now! Why you might ask? Well for one you are going to be more safe, web pages will open faster, Oh and you wont have to see any stupid advertisements, yes, that includes the adverts you see when playing Runescape. You can customize this browser to the core and still stay safe. Deep Freeze anyone? If you really want to stay safe, and I'm talking Fort Knox safe, then this application is for you, mind, i recommend it only if you have two hard drives because otherwise you will find your self not able to save anything. When you put this program into Freeze mode, you can do whatever you want on your PC, But as soon as you reboot your PC, all those changes are gone. It will be like you never touched your PC since the day you installed DeepFreeze. Do not let anyone fool you/Be wise The internet is full of people, granted. but can you trust them? NO! Do not ever trust someone to simply "send you a file", you have no idea what it is, and most importantly if you think you have been infiltrated, do not log into anything, work on getting rid of the problem before hand. Watch what you download The number one way in which people get hacked is because they are downloading files one after another from insecure sources. If you download from public P2P or even torrents, then i suggest you stop. This is a breeding ground for hackers, because so many people are unaware of how insecure it really is. If you still want to download, join a warez community, not only are you more safe, but you can obtain more files anyway. [/hide] This guide will get updated when i have the time, i know it doesn't cover everything, but i feel it is the begging step to what people need to know, feel free to comment. And i am sorry if you do not allow these kind of posts on this forum, But please do not flame me. Stephen Hawking is now a honorary member of the Runecrafting Guild.
