First thing, try to turn off any firewall you have and run the update. If it's not that let me know.

You can also try the update on their site. Uses different protocols.

edit:Seems as they've intergrated both into one. Basically uses the same protocols now. :(

K go back to the site, http://www.update.microsoft.com , and click on "Review your Update History". Click on the yellow question mark next to the Failed icon and read how to solve the problems. Post the solution here if it dont work for you.

Are you using Microsoft update or Windows update?

What version of Internet Explorer are you using? What are the security settings on it? Try adding update.microsoft.com to your trusted sites.

Looks like the issue caused by the recent 'stealth update' that MS rolled out to the update systems (which is a just plain stupid thing to do because it breaks crap). Good timing too, since this article hit slashdot just today, explaining that breakage. This MS kbase page should be helpful too, though I haven't tested it on my system with the same issues yet.

Thank you all very much for your help. Cruiser, thankyou very much with that point towards the KB article. The guided fix it gives works perfectly. I am surprised that I did not find it when i did my search. My computer is now updated completely.
