Step 1. Open MSpaint(That's what I use, so If you use something else when then meh.. -.- ) Size the picture until it is 400 by 175 pixels, the Tip. it limits for siggys. If you want to make a avatar, then use 100 by 100 pixels.

Step 2. Save the file as a PNG.

Sketch a basic outline for you figure. Don't worry- it doesn't have to be perfect. I choose a nice, simple placement of fruit.

Step 3. Erase and neaten the outline up. Make it look nice and clean,

no double pixels.

Step 4. Go in to Color Picker mode(Colors-Edit Colors)

and pick the colors you want the picture to be. Make sure you don't pick colors that are too saturated..

Below_the_line.png

Generally you want a saturation level below this line for base colors.

Fill the objects with the colors you chose using the paint bucket tool.

Step 5. Select your base color with the eyedropper tool(if necessary) and choose a color slightly lighter than it and brighter(more saturated) too.

When shading, you want to move the slider toward the color of your light source. in this case, a bright yellow sun, increasing the saturation, tint, and value levels.

Now scribble(neatly!) a nice area of lighter color inside your figure in the direction of your light source.(you might want to draw were your light source would be and maybe a few rays of light for reference). Repeat this process as necessary to achieve the desired lightness. Then, go back to your base color and do the same for the dark colors, shading away from your light source and picking colors in the opposite direction of it's color.

Continue to shade your figures until the picture is complete. You might want to add a nice background later on. To do this, simply go (Edit-Select All, Edit-Cut) and draw in the background however you wish. Then, when your done, simply hit (Edit-Paste) And place your subject in the background image.
