Does anyone know how I can take a free form text document (one I make myself) and convert it into PDF format without having to purchase a program to do it for me? Is there a free one out there?

Use Zamzar.

To add to the pile, if you have a Google account you can just use Google Docs to export it to a PDF if it doesn't choke on any fancy formatting you might have.

I highly recommend PrimoPDF. I've had no problems with it :)

Just noticed a new feature on the site called "Primo Online", it says you can convert files to PDF online. If you dont want to download the software you could try that.
