SHIPPOU
ah, how wonderfull to have to deal with a compleatly crashed computer. What caused the crash? I was doind win updates, and my system shut it's self down. You may asume it's a virus or spyware, but is wasn't/isn't. Any way, after 3 trys, I restored the system. The ongoing problem for me is this. My HP pavilion a305w loves to do 1 of 2 things randomy..doesn't mater what I am do ing (or not), doesn't mater what "mode" I'm in, I don't evan have to be running windows (it's crashed when I was in the bios controle pannel) The most common thing this 'puter does is reboot, again doesn't mater what I am doing, and it isn't virus or spyware...the system is not overheating..sometimes several times in a row (not a virus) a month ago, the computer has been starting to playing a new trick on me. again doesn't matter what I am doing, or not doing, bla, bla, bla... it will sort of shut off. the power light will turn orange-ish yellow (from it's normal blue), and the activity light will be sollid...and the computer isn't prosessing anything.....the moniter also goes into hybernation....every thing is locked out (keybord, mouse, e.t.c.) The only way to shut it off, or reboot, is to unplug it from the wall w8 2 minutes, and plug back in, nothing else works... Any body take a crack at what is going on? The people who don't read the post, and surgest viruses, scumware, or overheating, will be tossed out the window. ********** One of the old guard of RS. Phil
Could be a number of hardware problems (bad cpu, loose connections etc) Have you been changing anyting in your computer recently?
just1vet
I think the most likly cuprit is a power supply.

zonda
Sounds like it may be overheating and shutting down to prefent permanent damage. Open your case, and then try having your computer turned on for a while... if it shuts down let a fan blow cool air on in and then start the computer up with a fan blowing air on it.... In the case that is STILL shuts down, it would have to be a hardware problem, I would guess... like already stated, a loose connection, harddrive, and possibly the PSU Note: If it IS indeed overheating, pick up a few case fans from your local computer shop for $5  ... just1vet
Still think it's the power supply. I have had them test good on the tester but they were still bad. Could be also be your mother board is getting ready to wave goodbye.
____
I'd put my money on the PSU aswell. All the signs seem to point in that direction. Check it out in another box. If it runs fine there, then you might be looking at a new motherboard. Only other item which would cause it to shutdown/reboot while in BIOS. First of all, fans don't cool stuff down. They evaporate sweat which makes us feel cold ;) AFAIK fans in cases are used to keep dust from settling I just posted something! ^_^ to the terrorist...er... kirbybeam. Fans keep components cool, and take hot air out while brining cool air in. Dust has absolutly nothing to do with it, in fact most cases have an unbelievable ammount of dust in them.... kind of stange that they also have fans, huh? Not to mention dust really isn' that large of a problem in a computer... but overheating is. I have a hard time believing anyone would even think that  Computers can run like 140 degree's farenheit if you don't have a fan or heatsink in it, and guess what happens? Silicon chips melt or fry, and you can say bye bye I am astounded at this ignorace... wow ...
