May 19, 200521 yr Once again this is an opinion of someone who has read all the hitchikers series (and just about all the books written by douglas adams) but at first i was dissapointed by the movie and then i actually thought about the progression of the storyline in the books. Anyone who has read the books would know that the whole thing seems like it is a bit random but by the end of the 5th book would understand that it is only by then that everything is concluded. So really this movie was just made to take the major concept of book 1 (earth is a giantt computer) and conclude it by the end of book 1. So understandbly to do that they had to eliminate some of the things we love (thank god they left slartibartfast) but i still think it could have been improved to leave some of the more intricate parts.
May 20, 200521 yr Overall, I thought it was a pretty good movie. In my opinion it didn't capture the genius of Douglas Adam's book, but still a good movie. They skipped over some of the good jokes, and also character parts were lengthed and shortened (the Vogons and Marvin, respectivally). If you see the movie you should definately read the books, and in a way the movie, since it simplified the plot(lets face it, the masses probably couldn't handle all the complexity of Douglas Adams) it might make it easier to understand. Also the love story is a bit too much of the plot, but its hollywood. It doesnt hold too much to the book, but still a good movie by itself.
May 20, 200521 yr Unfortunately the movie was a bit dumbed down. Alot of priceless dialogue in the books(the bit about the leapord, etc) was reduced down to nothing, and the movie never fully explained why exactly it is important to have a towel. I will say that the movie was entertaining...though I did not particularly care for Trillian's and Arthur's romance. Too modern, too attempt-to-not-be-clicḫ̩̉̉.
May 20, 200521 yr  the book is awsome, even the first page made me laugh  never saw the movie yet tho
May 22, 200521 yr In general, the gist of this thread is that it wasn't nearly as good as the books, and I agree, but I think the film is better than most of you say. I liked Zaphod even though his heads and arms were a bit messed up. I liked the random probability thing... can't remember the name exactly even though i read the books... ; Ford and Arthur as sofas and wollen dolls. I doubt Douglas Adams would have wanted the Point of View gun and the Vogons' main part in the film included. There were, however, some well-adapted scenes which did make me laugh, and even remember the bits in the book I forgot before which was nice.
