NEW DELHI, MAY 7: The world of software pirates has just turned from tricky to dangerous. Microsoft Corp has revealed plans in US where they will not threaten the users of pirated software with jail and fines but instead will actually reward them, with spanking new software that is as official as the seal of the President of United States of America!

What do you have to do to turn an illegal operation into a legitimate one?

Well, all you have to do is go and reveal the name and address of the person and shop that you bought the software from.

The experts say this is an original and failsafe method. That may be true. For, perhaps America, the original land which the White folk pirated from the local Red Indians, is turning soft. US citizens may be quite law abiding, given the opportunity to grab some freebies.

Inquirer says, "Microsoft is offering US Americans compensation if they bought a dodgy copy of Windows, in exchange for information on its source.

The compensation will be in the form of a handy little product activation key by email, followed by a nice new legit copy of Windows XP in the post.

The scheme, labelled 'shaft your reseller' by, um, me, just now, is part of Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage programme which says that if you buy a proper copy of Windows everything will be rosy in your PC's back garden.

In a scoop, BetaNews says users of dodgy copies of Windows XP need only fill in a wee form, hand over the receipt they got from the bloke in the grey mac in the pub that they bought it off and send off the pirate disk to Vole Central."

But, Bill Gates better not come here to India with it. Considering that Indians are very smart and up-to-date with their artifices as well as general purpose dupsters, Windows may well end up losing lock, stock and its barrel too.

For all you have to do is land up in Nehru Place, Delhi, buy an illegal Windows product for barely 200 bucks, go next door to Microsoft Corp office next door in same place and hand over the offending article plus the name and address of the retailer!

And, presto! You have just transformed yourself into a law abiding, NASSCOM-believing IT-interest promoting person of high moral value.

I wonder if it works or if it's a scam to get people who buy pirated software off the streets.

erm- pretty sure it's a scam... i'll check it out tho.

Because it wouldn't have any effect. The reason they are doing this is to catch those making money from selling pirated Microsoft software. It would be fairly pointless to do this in countries were more pirated software than legal software is sold, because it would cost more than it's worth.
