Dear TIF-people, I got a little problem since my roommates made an electrical surge go through the house it apparently affected my USB storage device, which when i now connect it to my laptop gives the following notice:

USB Device not recognized: one of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message

Now ok, I follow up this message and I see that one of the USB devices has malfunctioned (the only one added at this moment is this storage device, and my webcam + microphone where working fine)

as a note it says: try reconnecting the device (did that 10x). If Windows still does not recognize it, replace the device.

Now does this mean i am screwed?? I got alot of schoolwork on that disk, not to mention all the stuff i downloaded over the years.... Any1 has a clever idea?

Go to a Best Buy and get in touch with the Geek Squad. See if they have any way to hack open the device and access the information on it somehow. After that, you will need to get a new one anyways.

Yep, its fried. While it might be possible to recover the contents of the drive, don't count on it. Recovering the data would probably be very expensive and have a very low chance of success.

well i don't know yet of this electrical surge was the problem... I will try it on a different pc today, because i read somewhere it is a possibility that your pc is the problem.....

Anyways i had a wrong translation, it was not a power surge, but a flow outburst, because my housemates connected too many devices on one electrical group in the house. The safety thing in there was blown instead of any other devices.... The only problem is now really that my pc won;t connect to it :wall: :wall:

yeh i know, i will transfer the data to another pc as well

Anyways I took the usb mass storage device to school, plugged it into one of the computers, and guess what?? it worked =P~

So now is the question: what is wrong with my stupid laptop that he suddenly does not recognise the usb storage device not any more?? I tried looking it up on the internet, and i find some solutions which i had not time for to do this morning.....

I really hate my laptop :wall:

okey, i now tested this stupid device on 2 different pc's and on both of those pc's it works.... I go home, hoping that it will work on my 'lil laptop too.... Not a chance :wall:

Really does any1 knows what I can do to fix this problem?

Also on another pc the mass storage device showed that it had 25 gigs out of 250 gigs still available, but you could not add things to it... Perhaps that has something to do with my laptop not recognizing it?

Geek Squad is a rip off and more likely than not won't have any clue how to recover data beyond plugging it into a machine and using a point and click utility your neighborhood geek could use.

For the OP:

Did you do *anything* to the machine before you noticed the drive not working? Is it making any clicking noises or noises it didn't make before? After you back up all your files to another place I'd run checkdisc on the drive to see if it can track down any errors as well.

nope i did not do anything to the disk...

It does not make clicking noises

I can;t run checkdisk or any programs like that because the disk drive won't show up in these programs

:wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: okey here a more detailed version of the problem:

Dear Forum members.

First of all I'd like to tell you I am not an experienced computer person though I am able to fix my own little problems just till now. I've had a 250 gig USB hard disk with external power supply for about 2 years now. It;s nearly filled with 25 gigs of free space left.

Somehow after I came home this weekend my laptop will not recognize the USB device any more, i tried it on all 3 external ports, didn't worked. Then I tried other USB devices such as camera's and microphones which all worked.

Today I took the USB device to university, where i connected it to one of the PC's there, and it worked! Then this afternoon i went to a friend, there it worked also! (although you could only copy files from it, not add more files).

Now I am back home, doesn't work. I tried Microsoft walk through for USB malfunctions, and it turns out that with all those things i did, still does not work. I reconnected it to another power outlet thing in my room, (so it is connected on it's own) still got no response. I tried everything I could think of, and the stupid part is that the device had been working properly before the weekend, and still is, only my pc can't contact it.

It might have something to do with my roommates because they overplugged a power outlet (like 2 pc's + TV + fridge on the same power outlet), could have been a power surge or something I have not a single clue what could have happened. Also what I notice is that if I switch my camera from the regular USB entrance I use for it, everything is ok, but when I use another one it starts nagging that it is not installed yet

Does anyone have a single clue what I can do next?

Hmm okey I got more information from other forums, apparently some problems might occur by which means i must delete all temporarily files (like the one my computer made), which i have done for now.

Other people said it might be possible you will have to turn down your USB disk for like 1 hour, which I am attempting now. I really hope this will work....

1. Do other USB devices work on the system?

yes

2. Is USB enabled in BIOS setup?

yes

3. Is the BIOS up-to-date?

yes

4. Have updated device drivers been tried?

it cannot find any updated drivers for it

5. Are any USB hubs being used?

no

6. Is the PC in question a portable (laptop/notebook)?

Portable

okey I am getting fairly pissed at my USB device atm, and I'm looking for a hammer

Nothing I tried worked so far, I will list here below some links to things I already tried:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/871233 (this is in dutch, but it think you can find the English version there as well)

http://www.hat.net/geeky/node/221

Changing USB to front or back gives no result at all. I uninstalled all drivers now in the hope the mass storage device will install them back themselves... And contacting Microsoft about it does not work at all... they just give me a phone number I should call, I don't have a working phone atm.... Sometimes you just like to pull out a hammer and start whacking around... really

(pulled these messages from myself of another forum)

If any1 knows the solution.... please!!!
