unknowz
Figured I'd use the same topic for this. Still with GIMP, tablet. I don't know how much time so far, probably over 3 hours, still got to clean up and detail UPDATE: Pretty much done, I decided to keep the forest abstract because I liked it better that way, total time between 5-6 hours Lines [hide][/hide] Colors [hide] [/hide] Complete Hair practice, GIMP default round brushes + tablet, took between 20-30mins Just getting used to drawing hair with a tablet. unknowz
^I already read a couple (10 or so) hair tuts, now just trying to learn myself the little things tuts can't teach you. But thanks anyways. Varda
Well, work LARGE, not just in a small size, and use one pixel brush, vary the opacity, and stuff, don't always use the same shade of red for example, but add in some blonde, brown and black. It doesn't come at first try, and everyone has their techniques they are trying to show others. Avoid the dodge/burn for highlights too.
unknowz
Some tuts say you should use burn/dodge, just not overdo it, and use low opacity. Burn/dodge is still the spawn of something evil. By large I mean 1000x1000px or higher.
tripsis
Burn/dodge is still the spawn of something evil. Haha I agree 100%!! Burn/dodge is really evil. It's far too difficult to control. If you just use various shades/colours of brushes, it makes life a lot easier. It's much easier to work in layers, you can go back and change things later, etc. The only time I ever use the dodge tool is to add some final highlights at the very end. Hair is really tricky to draw in general, at least for me. In fact, it's one of the hardest things to learn from a tutorial (again, in my opinion). Practice will really make perfect with this :D It looks pretty good so far - keep it up! I really like this tutorial for the basics of painting hair: Hair Tutorial. It gives you the basic idea of shading and uses brush sizes to your advantage. - 99 fletching | 99 thieving | 99 construction | 99 herblore | 99 smithing | 99 woodcutting - - 99 runecrafting - 99 prayer - 125 combat - 95 farming - - Blog - DeviantART - Book Reviews & Blog

Varda
Fyi, the only reason I post links to tuts and criticisms, is because I want you to became a better artist. I'll get together how I do hair after school, won't be much, just a small coverage.

Varda
Had to thumbnail it, 444x3000 pixels or so. If you really want to see the finished one: http://angband.deviantart.com/art/Portrait-74110875 Used roughly two hours. If I had more time, I would have taken more time to go in the details in the hair. As I said, there are many different ways to draw hair. I find that one the best for me. It's kinda tricky, but you should hopefully see what I mean? :P
unknowz
You have an interesting way to draw them, tho I think the hair should come in clumps a bit more. I'll try your way on my next drawing Here are the lines Thanks To:reddawn509, Hoopster211, JacobRyan, navyplaya, bigsword33, Ferahgo28, speedofsound, Goldwolflord, unknowz, GonAndGary and born2die
Bloodredsword
Awesome job, the big one is probably the best. The two small ones have to many highlihts in them, try to smooth that out. Varda
Crits: Work on anatomy, I see some errors in her arm and foot. You should work on your composition, perspective, background. And please, don't highlight with white, it only goes bad, instead use lighter colour (if having dark brown, go brown, light brown etc) But it all should go forward :D Nothing comes over the night, so good luck, matey :
