hey punc :)

I think you'd really benifit from taking a few minutes to get you're head around how the human body is sculpted, even with an image like this using some direct reference can at least push you in the right direction in how to go about shading. I've had a little look for an image that may help, upped the contrast and lowered the colour count so its a little bit easier to see noticable change in shades.

It seems you've had a good go with muscles but the shading you've applied to them doesn't make sense when you'd think at parts it would be much more raised than other parts. This image should help you to a degree but it's won't look all that convincing since he doesn't have any skin, its more to see where the muscles are and where they actually are underneath.

This would be a bit more help in terms of lighting, notice where the light hits when it comes from the general right side of the screen. I'd at least try to apply this to your character by possibly adding a lighter shade to build definition and adding the darker shade to areas to both define and to show where the light can't hit so strongly.

oh theres nothing wrong with over-exagerating, in fact it probably easier for you considering it's not meant to look realistic you should feel free to just experiment and see what works. It's all about whats more Aesthetically pleasing but some knowledge of human anatomy always makes it an easier process.
