Im sure once you've built up a background it'll look much better, just remember to add shading everywhere cus it can make such a difference to your pictures.. Also the characters aren't great but your the only person who can do anything about that, im sure that someone on the forum will have something negative to say about the characters though you can clearly see that a lot of works gone into this.. Keep it up :D , just work on the left character a lil more, thicken his legs and try darken the lines more on the right guys robes. Also I love the little expressions youve added to the pixel so far, the white lines coming off the monk and the movement behind the left guy..
