I've thought about that too. What's the point when it is just existence, and isn't going to matter when the universe collapses and everything is dead. Plus, what Mrpez said, the universe is infinitely big, so 1 person's problem out of billions on one planet out of the infinite galaxies doesn't change anything

I believe everything is relative.

 

 

 

To a 2 year old it can be a huge drama that his brother took his toy and got away with it. Even though we laugh at his tears, his pain is very real to him.

 

 

 

To me, most of the problems that my collegue has ('oh, no, my favourite perfume went out of business') are completely ridiculous. She, however, takes them very seriously.

 

 

 

And beyond doubt, some people would find the things I myself take seriously, ridiculous as well.

 

 

 

A certain degree of seriousness is important, because it shows what you value in life. To say you take nothing seriously, is a loss rather than a gain, I think. We take death seriously, because we value life so much. Dying yourself isn't that huge a deal, but having someone you love die, is the greatest fear we have. And rightly so... by attaching value to life and death, we can enjoy that life too.

 

 

 

Much as I value the ability to put things in perspective and to not take life seriously - something that I definitely try to do- I believe that that, in itself, is a defense mechanism as well. And by defending yourself, you lose not only negative things, but their positive sides as well. I guess it's all about balance.

 

 

 

I'm not sure at all if I'm making sense or if I'm even answering the question at all. I seem to have lost my talent for coherent thought today.

Well, in the whole course of the Universe it doesn't really make a difference, and so isn't serious, I agree.

 

 

 

But to us it's serious, at the time being. If it matters to us, then it is serious. We only live 100 years, so we should use the tools we got to make something out of those 100 years, even if it doesn't make a difference. Life doesn't have to be about making difference.

Depends, I reckon it doesn't matter that we're nothing in an infinitely large universe, if its serious is a matter of our planet and opinions, because its irrelevent in the rest of the universe anyway.'

 

 

 

I'm pretty sure I exist, my life is serious to me, lots of things are serious to me, but really I'm nothing compared to an infinitely large universe, nobody is, but I still belive its serious.

Out of the millions of sperm, you are the one who was given life. That's pretty special if you ask me. It is in our instinct to live and to avoid pain. If we're so subconsciously obsessed with living then that's a good enough reason for me to say life is serious. And also, we have no proof that anything will happen to us when we die. This might be the only chance we have - highly doubt it though.

Only because humans are animals like any other... What historical advantage would a person had if he didn't have a drive to stay alive? It's pure instict, not a higher purpose.

 

 

 

Try poking an ant around.. Even if it's smaller than the size of your fingernail, it will try to run away to live another day. It doesn't have brains, but because it's a living organism like you, it wants by definition to stay alive.

 

 

 

(Humans are the only species that actively commit suicide though)

To be honest, I'd rather be happy and wrong than miserable and right. I'd like to think I have a purpose because that's what makes me happiest - also, when I'm happy I tend to do nice things for others and make the world a better place. So, the mentality that I do have a purpose results in actually having one.
