Lacoste
What are the most common ways people to to get this, from 85 how much can I expect to pay?
kingmickez25
When smelting, the Blast Furnace will be your best option to save money while making runite bars. You are saving 20,000gp with every run of 25 runite bars you make at the furnace. If you have a large quantity of runite ores, the money saved will add up. Otherwise, superheating the runite ores into bars is your next best alternative. If you can craft nature runes, you are paying 100-120gp per nature rune in the end instead of 300-350gp. Do not bother smelting runite ore at a furnace unless you have a very small amount of runite ores and you are smelting them at Port Phasmatys. As for what to smelt try rune axes or addy arrow heads

uwillbeowned
Don't bother doing gold, it's overrated and a waste of time.. Make Addy plates from 88-99, best way to go in my opinion (and the way I did it). At current GE average prices, smelting gold from 88-99 then selling the bars will cost you 46mill. Smithing Addy plates and selling the bodies for average will cost you about 40 mill. 6 million cheaper and five times faster! Addy plates are the way to go. 99 Herblore, 30m+ exp99 Farming, Smithing, Prayer, Magic, Crafting, Cooking, Fletching.

All_Is_Great
My guess would be buying the bars, because there's always a lot of them coming from aviansies.

Inuashakent
My fourth 99 gotten for this goal was smithing, yet another buyable but fast skill. However, while still being fast, it was twice as slow as any of the three skills I had previously maxed; nevertheless, I made it. It was difficult to decide which of these was the most efficient method: superheating gold, steel plates, or mith plates. I did some preliminary calculations that suggested superheating gold was most efficient, and indeed, I superheated gold to 97 smithing. However, I later re-evaluated my decision and switched over to steel plates at 97 smithing. It was still very hard to decide though (since you have to value magic xp as well), and as of getting 99 smithing, I still wasn't very sure what was really best. In the months that have passed since I originally posted this, I've also heard that adamant plates have become quite good. Perhaps they are the best option right now. Rates: Superheating gold: 101.2k smithing and 95.4k magic xp/hour Steel plates: 130k smithing xp/hour Mithril plates: 173.3k smithing xp/hour Prices vary for each. Going on to what I actually did: I did most of my superheating in Pest Control bank. Superheating takes a lot of concentration, so I had to have PM off. Superheating 1850-1870 ores is possible during good hours, while many distractions can reduce it to 1800-1840 or less than 1800. My average was about 1800 per hour. I did my steel plate smithing at Varrock west. There are a few tricks to going fast, but nothing surprising. Varrock armor 3 helps a bit. 3200-3600 bars per hour are possible. I used 148k gold ores, worth 575 each, 148k nats, worth 270 each, and 38k steel bars, worth 550 each. I got back 148k gold bars, worth 180 each, and 7.5k steel plates, worth 1000 each. It took me about 95 hours to get 99 smithing and I lost about 111.5M total. [Summoning guide (AOW)] [Slayer guide] [Melee & Brawl player]
lordkafei
I bought a lot of addy bars and smithed bolts. Some I feathered, some I sold as unf. When addy was slow, I did mith. It depends a lot on how popular GWD is... when lots of people are dumping addy bars on the market, then you can make a go of it. When bars are scarce, it's less attractive. Right now, bars are 2258. Addy bolts are 197, addy bolts (unf) are 201. So that's 250 gp loss per bar at the median prices. If you are patient, you can buy the bars at low and close the loss a good bit. I also did a lot of superheating - I would buy a few thousand addy ores and go superheat them up, then make the bolts and sell. You could always buy the addy ores, get coal from your kingdom and smith bolts at the blast furnace. I did a lot of that too. The one thing I did not do was buy a bunch of gold ore.
