My Built In CD Drive has gone AWOL

Featured Replies

So the only CD/DVD Drive drive on my computer is well.... missing. Its all plugged in, but the CD drive wont load anything and theres nothing for it under "my Computer" Im on a Compaq Presario Windows XP 2002.

What can i do to get it back (note: please explain to me with dumbed down versions of help, like telled me what a file could be called ect, but dont get cocky)

Thanks a ton!!

Sig

Try restarting the computer? Happens to me some times and restart seems to fix it.

The "Presario" part tells me you might be on a laptop, but I'm not 100% sure. Could you clarify? This way, I can differentiate between the ways to fix the two possible problems: loose cable or cable short.

Desktop, sorry for not clarifying

Expanding on what sloter said... When you reboot, watch for the light on the front of the CD/DVD drive to blink. If it does not, then the drive may have died and/or had a cable short. (If it did die, you know already what you must do next.) :|

Makoto, didn't you notice that they had already checked their cable connections? :-s

I was aware that he had everything "plugged in", but that doesn't mean there isn't a short in the line. That's happened to several CD/DVD drives that I've had, so I usually try and check there first.

Since it's a desktop, you might do good to go into your case and swap out the power connector for another one that's not hooked up. If you can't afford to do that, make sure that the power connector is in there in the right way, and is hooked up nice and snug. Do the same for your IDE/SATA cable.

You could also check and see if it is picked up in BIOS.
