New Nintendo DS Announced: Camera, Music Playback, Wi-Fi Upgrade, Under $189

by Blake Ellison Sep 28, 2008 6:47pm CST tags: Nintendo DS, Nintendo

Nintendo has announced that it will release an upgraded model of its popular handheld, the Nintendo DS. Featuring a camera, music playback and more modernized features, it will come to market in Japan this year at a price not far above the current model.

According to reports from Japanese-language newspapers Yomiuri and Nikkei Net, pictures taken with the camera will be usable in games released for the system. Meanwhile, it is predicted that CDs and other music will be able to be imported onto the DS for playback.

The Wi-Fi antenna currently in use for multiplayer gaming is set to get a power boost, as well. The new wireless technology under the hood will be used to "more easily access news" and other up-to-date information such as weather.

The upgraded DS will be released in Japan this year at a price of "under 20,000 yen" ($189). For reference, the current DS sells in Japan for 16,800 yen ($159).

Multiple sites have published the rumours, but this is the first article that says for a fact that Nintendo has announced it. I'm not sure of the credibility of shacknews so take this with a grain of salt.

Nintendo have traditionally made there consoles all about the games, i just cant see the music importing etc.

I wont be surprised to see a new DS, im think an ultra thin ds with ditches the GBA port because thats what will reduce the size of the thing.

If the camera is good, I'm going to upgrade from my old Phat DS no doubt. If it doesn't come to the States, I might be forced to import it though...

Depends on the size. I need a new DS, and I've been thinking of a black Lite for its sweet design and backlight.

I have an iPod, I have a camera phone, I even have a digital camera already. I don't need all this on my DS too.

I will most likely be sticking with my lite. Partly because I'm sure nintendo might try and make some of the current flash carts obsolete with it.

I got a black ds lite for my b day like 2 years ago, Still works great and I've dropped it down the stairs like 20 times...

The new ds sounds cool, but it will be one of those things I don't need :? as I already have a normal ds, an Ipod shuffle (red oh yahh!) and a camera which I rarely use, But I rarely take my ds out with me.
