So my uncle gave me $2000.00 to buy a computer for college as a graduation present. I am looking to buy a dual monitor set-up. I want the computer to be good enough to run software like NetBeans (or any java compiler) and a game (or these forums) without freezing.

You can also recommend parts. I know how to build a computer from scratch, I am just bad at selecting parts.

If you want 2 video cards, might as well get high end ones such as 4870X2 or the [8][9]800 GT/S/X's or GTX series as having multiple low end cards is pointless, seeing as one high end card is cheaper and performs better than 2 mid range cards.

I would suggest custom building your computer. Have at least 2 gigs of ram, I suggest 3. Also, put in the extra money, even if it means going 2 grand to 3 grand, and buy the best, to next best, of everything you are getting. If you get a video card, processor and stuff that has been out for a year already, it will be outdated in the next few months. The only mistake I made was going with a beta tested motherboard. I also recommend buying an awesome power supply.

Get 4gb. More gb and less space. To get 3gb in dual channel you need 2x1024mb&2x512mb=Taking up 4 slots.

He posted 2 of these threads, one in which the matter was cleared several days ago. You aren't helping anything, "buy an awesome psu"... Ok, the next time... Maybe you want to recommend an awesome psu instead of just saying? Else keep away.

 

Buying a computer now is no problem, it will last for a long time... Example, Q9550&HD 4870 will last for a good while!
