runescapeloser22
Today, my computer has been running REALLY slow, programs like iTunes are running normal speed. But when I'm browsing online it goes incredibly slow (it took 5-6 minutes to open firefox, load the forum index, go to Tech and Computers, and open a new topic form). I've tried using Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer, they are all really slow. But this is the family desktop computer because my laptop isn't usable at the moment.). The rating Vista gives my system is 4.7 is that affects anything. I have 27.1GB left out of 64.4GB on my hard drive, so that isn't an issue. Any help would be appreciated greatly!
urbestfreind
Can you take a screenshot of your processes and post it here, preferrably when the slowdown happens if possible. You wouldn't happen to have steam running or anything like that right? Also, would you happen to be running BitLord when you have the problem? Because that could very likely be a direct or indirect (ie you downloaded malware) cause of the slowdowns. Other than that, I can't see anything else that may cause you problems, save the indexing service, but I would need the aforementioned screenshot before making any reccommendations (although I can safely say close Steam, it's a RAM hog). Errdoth
I'm going to second slow internets due to you torrenting. My windows system was (teehee, I don't use it anymore [/linuxsnob]) always really, really slow while I was torrenting, even with speed restrictions and QoS enabled. Just exit out of torrents for a bit and see if your internet speeds up? Last.fm Signature Overlays
Mamong
If you're torrenting, you're internet will slow, especially if you're uploading a lot back. If you have a torrent that downloads fairly quick, but is uploading heaps, you will find the internet will slow to a crawl. I have uTorrent and I just turn the uploads down a little, and the internet should speed back up a bit. runescapeloser22
I haven't had anything downloading for a long time on the this computer, it just auto-starts (no downloading) when I log on. I did quit out of Steam, and now it seems to be going normal speed again! I'm going to uninstall it, since I don't need it on this computer anyway. If it happens again I'll ask you guys again! urbestfreind
Glad I/We could be of some assistance. And I just learned before dinner that even though you aren't downloading anything, you still get bandwidth eaten up. I use Limewire, and I had it running, went out to ask my dad a question, and he told me I was downloading something...My download had finished about an hour before, and I have it set for no uploads, so it could potentially slow your computer down. I know it rapes my framerate on WoW, even if I'm not downloading. And you don't exactly need to remove steam, just disable it's startup (Disable the torrent on startup too, while you're in there). Just do start > run > msconfig - startup tab, and uncheck the steam and torrent checkboxes (and ONLY THOSE CHECKBOXES)...I've made the mistake of unchecking something that was of a rather high importance for starting up before, and it's not pretty. Nadril
I'd always close out of any torrent programs when you aren't downloading. They'll bring any computers internet connection to a crawl.
JimmyDave
Firefox usually slows down the system coz it increases CPU usage, i ve been experiencing. Here you can find best unsecured loans and bad credit loans like never before!

rwinner16
95% sure that its McAfee thats messin with your comp usage. McAfee was designed to be a business antivirus software. It wasn't designed to be fully operational off of one computer. McAfee tried to go into the public but they didn't dumb down the background processing requirement to make it work. I suggest you uninstall it, and revert to a different anti-virus. Norton is starting to have the same problem, so I don't suggest changing to it. If you choose to uninstall it, make sure you go through afterwards and delete the program file, and close any processes that are left running. Certain versions have a habit of coming back, under the radar. If this doesn't sound like it makes any sense, its 7am, and I haven't slept in almost 3 days. Live life to the fullest, or don't live at all.
