It will work. But the salve ammy only gives bonuses to attack and strength, not mage. You're best bet is to don ya range gear (Black Dragonhide or Karils) and use the salve ammy with a whip. No point in dragon hide of you're not ranging... I've not had much experience with Ankous but I thought they attacked with magic or mage based melee, hence the dragonhide suggestion.
