Major news stories this summer (US only)

I was just curious what everyone thinks, so far, that the major US event/story has been. I was assigned to write an essay over the summer (by my US Government class) to read the newspaper daily and write what I thought the most important news story was (in my opinion of course, so there is no right or wrong answer ). Thought this post may give some people around the boards a sense for current events :)

Post a link to the article if you can and a reason why it's so important.

These are the current stories I think are most important:

Resignation of Supreme Court Justice O'Connor

I thought this was pretty significant because the balance between liberals and conservatives will be disrupted, meaning some of the more controversial rulings may be reversed.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/thenation/20050 ... 234/nc:742

Deep Throat ID'd

It's semi-significant just because it has been getting a lot of press coverage just because he brought down a presidency many years ago.

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/8486700/

Gonzales vs. Raich (Medical-pot ruling lets Congress regulate 'virtually anything'):

http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepubli ... t0612.html

Bush announces Supreme Court nominee ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ãâ John G. Roberts Jr.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/scotus_bush

This is a major event just because if he does become a Justice, it could swing a LOT of votes, considering that O'Connor was the swaying vote in landmark cases during her time.

I'd go with the Supreme Court justice one. It has more of an actual impact, and reflects the power struggle that's currently going on - as well as the fear among the "blue states" that the "red states" and their representative, Bush, are crazy evangelists.

Another interesting answer would be to discuss the Harry Potter phenomenon. Although it isn't political exactly, it is news, and it says a lot about our culture.

Everybody hug and spread the love :D

Ya, I'm surely going with that unless another topic of greater impact arises before school starts. But I'm also trying to get a perspective on some of the stories I may have missed, not to mention just allow some other posters to get caught up in current events :)

No problem, Mage. Sounds pretty similiar, good luck with it :D

The amount of Jews returning to Russia in recent years has come under scrutiny in the past few months.

This could be a pretty big problem, considering that during the Trotsky era , many of those who engineered the slaughter of 30 million christians are now known as Jews, and this event has effected just about everyone in Russia in a missing Grandparent, or a Grandparant who suffered at the hands of the communist soldiers.

It hasn't been widely reported however, best recent example I can think of was nationalists requesting the investigation of the Kitsur Shulhan Arukh religious laws on the grounds of promoting religious hatred which you can read about here:

While that is a major issue, I was hoping to keep it US related only. Thanks for the article though, it was a good read.

Oh yeah, good find Shippou, I never even knew that happened

The U.S.A has somthing like 2 million more jewish people than there are in Israel, wityh a total of about 6 million just in 1997 , any reaction this provokes will almost certainly be there considering the political climate in Russia , while politically correct, would not lend itself to much action on their behalf.

Sorry, I don't have much to add, but I wouldn't go with Deep Throat. I'm going to have econ/gov this year also and I figure my teacher will spend a worthless week on it. This was nothing exiting and revolutionary. The guy should have already felt pride in what he did. By coming out, he didn't bring any new information.

There is a large community of Russian jews in my town, because they were severely persecuted in home Russia. The Jews were treated well under Trotsky but certainly not under Stalin - they were hurt in the mass slaughters as well as the Christians. :\

I don't think anyone was treated well under Stalin.

Somthing I found funny in the American media, these small articles in the media about a new 'Civilians Brigade' patrolling the mexican border is in actuality more than 15,000+ volunteers hardly what we term a brigade in England :P more of a small army.
