[Ubuntu] Problems using headphones on laptop

This is an issue that I've had since updating to Ubuntu 8.10. Simply put: when I plug in headphones on my laptop the sound still plays through the main speakers. This obviously defeats the purpose of using headphones. I'm using ALSA for all my devices.

Feel like giving PulseAudio a try?

To activate it: System -> Preferences -> Sound, then select "Autodetect". It should pick up on PulseAudio, if it's installed, and it should work.
