I'm looking for a way to network my computers (I'll have up to four that would need to be on at the same time)

A fairly basic 4-port router. I'm not sure if you want the computers to be able to access the internet at once, but it does that too. As for KVM-switches, I can't say I've had any real experience with those.

cant you network two computers by just hooking the two network cards together? :?

For KVM Switches, I'd suggest IOGear, they make good high-end switches that last forever. I used to work at Best Buy as well and we used IOGear switches for our public displays, and we've never had to replace a single one. They run around $25-35 depending on where you purchase them at.
