Dual Boot Question

Featured Replies

So, I want to keep Vista on this machine. But I also would like to try out Linux, or perhaps even Window 7. I've partioned my HDD to make another free 20GB. Now my question, do I go ahead and format the drive with NTFS or leave it unformatted? But then, how do I save an OS onto it without it ever going into the other HD?

When you install the OS you're going to have the option to format it.

If you're going to install windows 7 you're going to have to format the drive as NTFS, if you're installing linux you're going to have to have a swap partition that's about 1gb (for the bootloader), and then the rest is going to go ext3.

I would leave the partition unallocated until you're installing the new OS.

Leave it clean. To get Linux on there download an image of a CD installer (I strongly recommend Ubuntu), burn it, and boot from it. It will format it, possibly as ext3, during the installation.

Ok great! Thank you, visuals always help. I'm downloading it now to put on a CD, but I've been on the same encrypted page for twenty minutes. -.-

Ok, seriously, I'm still here.

It's been, what, 50 minutes? -.-

EDIT: Got it working. And Windows 7 is pretty good.

Wubi is an excellent way to try out Ubuntu variations of linux, easy to setup and remove (add/remove programs in windows :) ) You need to keep your disk de-fragmented on a regular basis though or it can slow down quite a bit.
