I have a desktop with XP and just got a laptop with Vista, I want to transfer my old files and programs over to the laptop, for example, itunes, music files, norton antivirus, video games, aol setting, etc...... What is the best way to do this? I really dont want to use a flash drive.

It's called the Walmart Rental..

Go to Walmart

Buy an external harddrive

Xfer all your data to the x-harddrive

Xfer the data from x-harddrive to your new computer

delete everything off the x-harddrive

Return it and say you found a better deal online.

Buy a USB - to - USB cable

Cheapest way would be to use a cat 5 cable and just network the two computers together and transfer the data that way. However, a few things to note:

- Don't transfer over norton, and get something good like Avira.

- The games you will have to reinstall, so hopefully you still have the CD/DVD's and/or the digital downloads available to you. You can't transfer them due to windows creating registry files upon install.

- AoL settings? I'm sure there is a way you can transfer that, but do you mean just for getting connected online, or browser settings, or what? :?

get an ethernet crossover cable as nadril said.

that will cost you next to nothing, heres one on ebay for 1 cent that has 3 dollars postage:

just plug the 2 computers together with that cable, do any setup required to get it working, the then make a sharing folder on the new computer. get on the old computer and copy everything you need into that shared folder, then get on the new computer and move everything from the shared folder to wherever you need it.

Otherwise KnightLite had a very creative and cost effective idea.
