There is a missing clue that I've come across:

The location of the crate is in the second floor of the south tower east of the Lumbridge teleport spot.

There are only two crates there one on top of the other so I'm guessing it was the top one I searched.

Crate, Lumbridge Castle Crate, Southern tower in the Lumbridge Castle. When you're standing outside and facing the castle, it's inside the tower on the left -- the tower is part of the wall that surrounds the castle, it's not part of the actual castle building.
