Steve Vai and Satriani

Featured Replies

I have recently looked to both gods of guitar and gained interest in them. But idk where to start, the local record store has a huge collection of both of them, so i am confident i can find every album made. Where should i start with both? Also, if possible, i am looking in something more rock than jazzy, but anything is okay.

Thanks in advance ::'

Joe Satriani's new gig. He finally found a band with a singer. This album is going to kick major [wagon].

The album comes out this month. They also have a website that has two of the songs that you can listen to.

I'd say look into G3 as well. The one I hear often has Satriani, Vai, and Malmsteen. It's two disks, the third of which is just all 3 more or less jamming on songs. Best version of Rockin' in the Free World I've heard... :lol:

Actually the date is changed to June 5th in Europe and June 7th in the US. Both the songs (Soap on a Rope and Down the Drain) are on their MySpace.

Check out G3, I'd say the petrucci songs are FAR better than the malmsteen ones.

In terms of albums, I'm not a massive Vai fan, so I have no idea what to recommend there, but in terms of satriani, you should pick up

The Electric Joe Satriani: An Anthology to start with. And if you like that, get Not of this Earth and The Extremist

If you enjoy Joe and Steve, I'd recomment Paul Gilbert as well. His Singing is Definitely inferior to Joe's but his guitar work is just as amazing.

Don't bother, they're both incredibly over-rated. Instead, try these:

Guthrie Govan - Undisputed master of the guitar. Arguably the best alive, he plays jazz-fusion. But don't be put off; even though you said you want more rock than jazz, this guy can definitely deliver what you're looking for. His album "Erotic Cakes" may be hard to track down, but the effort is WELL worth it. Video of him playing "Fives" -

(Don't be put off by the beginning - skip to 1:40 to see him shine. Your mind will be demolished.)

Andy Timmons - You want Steve Vai? This guy is signed to his label. He also plays a kind of fusion, but he leans more to the rock side. He doesn't shred much, but when he does, you KNOW the guy has earned his spot on Vai's label. His last.fm - www.last.fm/music/Andy+Timmons Listen to Electric Gypsy and Groove or Die. I think you'll be impressed.

Neil Zaza - This guy can do just about anything with the guitar. He shreds, he grooves, he jams. His sense of melody is unbelievable, and his phrasing is incredible. He covers a lot of classical pieces and composes lots of original material as well. If you like Satriani, you'll like this guy. last.fm/music/Neil+Zaza

im not a huge fan of either, but ive would recomend surfing with the alien album for satriani. as for vai, i dunno about an album, but look up eugene's bag of tricks from the movie crossroads.

btw: if you're into the whole guitar guru thing, i'd check out some buckethead and some malmsteen.

god must be a builder. his original quote said six days, he didnt finish on time, he buggered off, didnt make a good job of it in the first place, and he still hasnt finished.
