Fizzzard
For those of you not yet aware I am using Ubuntu 9.04. I upgraded to Intrepid and then to Jaunty from Hardy today. That took a while. So I finally have the chance to play RS today. Well there's a bit of a problem. Seems I have the wrong type of Java, it's making me use the unsigned applet, and i do not like standard detail. Can anyone, who can load HD RS, tell me what Java packages I should have installed? 66,275th to 99 Cooking 73,802nd to 99 Fletching 8,839th to 99 Smithing 71,320th to 99 Magic
JoeDaStudd
Use the package manager to install the official JRE. By default ubuntu uses a license/source free version. If you need a guide there are plenty around and should work the same on either version of ubuntu. Fizzzard
64 bit. The link that's in the 64bit section, second line, does not work. Found what looks like a backup of the file http://ftp.pwr.wroc.pl/pub/mozilla/fire ... 686/en-US/ This link important or is it just downloading and installing firefox? Can it be replaced by a current version? 66,275th to 99 Cooking 73,802nd to 99 Fletching 8,839th to 99 Smithing 71,320th to 99 Magic
dsavi
There's a typo in the link, try wget http://mozilla.mtk.nao.ac.jp/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.0.9/linux-i686/en-US/firefox-3.0.9.tar.bz2 Long code is long; Just copy, go to your terminal and do Edit-> Paste (And do away with any whitespace)
Fizzzard
Did everything thing it said. I can run standard detail now. Any way to get HD? Should probably also mention that my visual effects are not working, Jaunty seems to have a problem with NVIDIA... 66,275th to 99 Cooking 73,802nd to 99 Fletching 8,839th to 99 Smithing 71,320th to 99 Magic
Makoto_the_Phoenix
Could you tell us what it says when you try to run glxgears? This usually helps debugging things more than ya think. ;) Linux User/Enthusiast | Full-Stack Software Engineer | Stack Overflow Member | GIMP User...Alright, the Elf City update lured me back to RS over a year ago. Makoto_the_Phoenix
GLX missing entirely? Hmm...Perhaps it was never added in xorg.conf, which is bad. (Of course, the newer xorg files don't really need the conf file, but still.) I want you to give this a shot, alright? Bear with me on this, since I haven't had to reinstall my nVidia drivers in nigh on 4 months. Please make sure to write these instructions down, since you won't be able to see them when you go to runlevel 3. 1) Go to http://www.nvidia.com, and get the latest drivers. Put them on your Desktop. 2) Drop down to runlevel 3 by pressing CTRL+ALT+F3. 3) Type the commands: sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop && cd ~/Desktop 4) Make the driver binary executable by running chmod +x NVIDIA-, where TAB is when you hit the TAB button ;) 5) Run through the installation, agreeing to most everything (some nonessential things may fail, that's fine). 6) If all goes well, type sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start and you should be able to use glxgears. If it doesn't, let me know again. Linux User/Enthusiast | Full-Stack Software Engineer | Stack Overflow Member | GIMP User...Alright, the Elf City update lured me back to RS over a year ago. Fizzzard
When I do step 4 it just gives me the standard prompt line again (user@computer blah blah blah). glxgears still gives the same response as before. 66,275th to 99 Cooking 73,802nd to 99 Fletching 8,839th to 99 Smithing 71,320th to 99 Magic

It's supposed to succeed silently, so it's fine. Glxgears not working is not fine. Did you complete the steps? Fizzzard
Well it never prompted me for anything related to step 5. 66,275th to 99 Cooking 73,802nd to 99 Fletching 8,839th to 99 Smithing 71,320th to 99 Magic
Makoto_the_Phoenix
Did you then try to run the binary installer by using ./NVIDIA-? I'm sorry if I left that out, but making a file executable without running it defeats the purpose. Fizzzard
Well..... glxgears now runs a little animation of 3 gears. Makoto none of that has worked and somewhere I screwed up and have just finished reinstalling Jaunty twice. Visual effects work now, the NVIDIA driver is active. RS runs but when I try to enter HD Firefox crashes, this is the only problem currently. That link does work. 66,275th to 99 Cooking 73,802nd to 99 Fletching 8,839th to 99 Smithing 71,320th to 99 Magic
