So I bought World in Conflict maybe a year ago (great game btw) and I played it a lot on my old computer. Well, that one got fried and I got a new computer and installed the game. The installation went through perfectly, but when I went to hit play on the autorun screen, it said "could not find file: /blablablab/wic[Caution: Executable File]. Turns out that the disk wouldn't install the application for me, just SOME of the game data.

 

 

 

I then went to the old computer and put all the game files on a USB drive and brought them over to this computer. After reinstalling the game and putting all the files onto this computer, I try to start it and 1 of 2 things happens. If I try single player, I get the message that the original disc is not in the drive and I need to find the original disc (The original disc IS in the drive though) Heres the error message from that:

 

You are trying to start a copy-protected application which requires the original disc to be in the CD/DVD-ROM drive. Please check to make sure your disc is an original.

 

 

 

If this message occurs while using the original disc, please check if the correct communication mode is chosen for your drive. Please check to make sure the DMA mode is enabled by using the Device Manager:



  1. Open the Device Manager.

  2. Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers to display the list of controllers and channels.

  3. Right-click the icon for the channel to which your CD/DVD drive is connected, select Properties, and then click the Advanced Settings tab.

  4. In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select 'DMA if Available' if the current setting is 'PIO Only.' If the drop-down box already shows 'DMA if Available' but the current transfer mode is PIO, then you must toggle the settings. That is: - Change the selection from 'DMA if available' to PIO only, and click OK. - Then repeat the steps above to change the selection to DMA if Available.

And then if I try multiplayer (which doesn't require the disc) The application starts up and I can see it on my task bar. Then, the screen goes black like it's trying to load. Then, the whole thing just stops running and its back to where I was before.

What operating system are you using and what was the OS on the old computer?

Vista 64-bit and the old one was a Widows Xp Media Center

Vista 64x has problems with DMA, unless anyone else has some advice then i think googling it and looking for others with the same problem might be your only option.

 

 

 

Edit: You could try ripping the iso file off the disc and running it with daemon tools.

I can try to simplify it for you. An ISO File is literally the disc 'image', it's an archive that contains all the files from the disc, in their proper folders. Daemon tools is a drive emulation tool. By that, I mean that it 'creates' drives on your computer which act like proper CD/DVD drives, to which you can 'mount' the ISO file into.

Ok that still made no sense but I reinstalled the game and reinstalled the latest patch and then ran it. It FINALLY asked me to verify with my CD key so I did it and now it works. Thanks, I think i made it much harder than it needed to be.
