The thing I could see being dissapointing with Fortnite though, is if the maps are always the same, people will quickly figure out where to get the best stuff the fastest and the gameplay will get horrendously repetitive.

As with every mutliplayer game.

Yeah, but that's why I ended up disliking Nazi zombies, you just end up going to "the best corner". Now if they made stuff you found different every time, then it could be fun, so each base would be different. And though it doesn't look like the case, I'd blow a load if you could place/ drag and drop shit yourself.

If you look at it before they start placing stuff, it's all blue and shows what will go where. To me that implicates "You need these things to build a base here" rather than, "Ok I'm going to place 2 steel beams here, some planks there, nail a sign to this here... Now I have a ragtag wall."
