Hey everybody, I noticed that there was no Floyd thread on the Off Topic forum, so I decided I made one. IÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ve been a Floyd fan now for little longer than a year and IÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢m curious what you guys think of the band.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

A small Introduction and basic info on Pink Floyd.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The band starts in 1965 when Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Rick Wright start the band ÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¦Ã¢â¬ÅSigma SixÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃâÃ

Probably one of the best bands ever.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

It was good to see them reunited for Live 8, which was another benefit of the concert.

I went to see the Australian Pink Floyd show (biggest and best tribute act) at the MEN in April, they were incredible. They replicated the songs perfectly - even The Great Gig in the Sky.

Ooh, that sounds good! I never heard anything of their tribute bands though. Who did they use to do The Great Gig in the Sky?

I don't really have anything to add, but I wanted to assert my appreciation of Pink Floyd.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Actually, I do have stuff to add after all. Maybe this is commonly known, but Douglas Adams (the man who wrote the The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy series and all that) was a friend of Dave Gilmour, and it was he who picked the name "The Division Bell" for that album (from the lyrics). Also, for his 42nd* birthday, he played guitar at a concert of theirs, or something like that.

It was just one of the female chorus. They had kids from a local school in to do another brick pt. 2.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The only problem I could find in their performance was the singer lacked the small vocal flourish on the end of each line in 'Time'. I only noticed that because it's my favourite song by them and I've listened to it to death.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

That said, for a bunch of aussies they pulled off EXCELLENT 70's/80's british accents.

I'm not reading all that so if you said it towards the end then kill me. But I thought Syd Barrett really didn't get kicked out, he just sort of went insane from too much LSD every day and went off. But my favorite Floyd stuff is when Syd Barrett was lead.

Oh and you said that floyd album's are expensive where you live averaging 16-20 euros? That stinks bc at least where I live they cost like 14-18 dollars max and since the dollar is half the worth of the euro its like 8-10 euros.

Barrett was indeed not functioning the correct way, living on acid-trips, playing un tuned guitars, not even able to tune his guitar etc. (I believe that change became definite when he went to some kind of friends where he stayed for a few weeks only using acid and other drugs). Waters invited Gilmour early ÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãâ68 to the band, and it was meant that he was going to do the live performances, while Barrett was kept of-stage doing the song writing. Waters told this to Barrett, and Barrett didnÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t really give a reaction, hence him still coming to the recording studio to rehearse while he was ÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâfiredÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ (of course he couldnÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t rehearse). He was not welcome at on-stage nor the studio anymore. After that he left, went back to Cambridge living as a hermit. ThatÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s what I meant with ÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâkickedÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢.

Hehe, now I look stupid. :P Being their first single I assumed it was on Piper, but I checked my copies of Piper and it wasnÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t on it

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

How dare you dis Atom Heart Mother like that. It's a work of art, it's definately one of my top 5 PF albums...It's just...So...Good...The title suite is simply...Brain...Melting...Drool all over your shirt kind of cool. What with the huge orchestra, the French horn (for ownage), all that violins and the choir...Not to mention some amazing work from all the members of the band for music. "If" completely contrasts with the former song, and has some great light music, astounding lyrics, and there first foray, if you will, into thoughts of insanity (later seen...well...lots of places). After that, what I consider the most underrated song...EVAR...Summer '68. I'll agree that its light and kinda pop-ish...But that just proves that PF doesn't have to be all out there (not that that doesn't work for them)...It's got incredible lyrics and thought...All the intruments do there part (Piano esspecially - and is that trumput *doesn't know intruments*) great singing (Wright's voice is wicked underrated) and its perhaps equally or more drool-on-shirting than the title suite. Great song. Then after that it goes into "Fat Old Sun", and since you agree with me on that, I'll just say - awesome guitar-ness. Then the last track, Alan's Psychedelic Breakfeast...Well, it's interesting - awesome sound...The whole making of breakfeast get's boring (and ocassionally annoying) when listening to it often, but when you listen to the music its pretty good.

actually was Atom Heart Mother that was recorded in a rush, which you can hear at some points too (for example MasonÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s drums). And ÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¦Ã¢â¬ÅAlanÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s Psychedelic BreakfastÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃâÃ

I'm still looking for: Umma Gumma, The Final Cut, and The Division Bell. I know I can get the latter 2 anywhere, but Umma Gumma I've seen only occassionally at my local music store. I need to wait for it to come back :(. Also I still need Relic's, but I'm not going to hold my breath. And I can't order online.

I've only ever heard one Pink Floyd song, 'Money' and i thought it was really good, i like the sarcastic lyrics and the whole piece in general. I'm wondering if you guys think I would DarkSide of The Moon?

My Dad used to listen to them when he was younger, and most of my college friends have them in their Top 3 of Bands, so even if you guys think I won't like it, I may as well try. 8)
