DVI to HDMI with audio

Recommended Posts

hi, i just bought a new computer with a nvidia gts 250 video card, and i wanted to use my hdmi cable to hook it up to my moniter with a dvi to hdmi adapter, but when i hooked it up there is no sound. is there some settings i have to change to enable audio on my dvi output? cause i read on the specifications that the graphics card is hdmi enabled.

HDMI has sound output, DVI does not, thus a DVI to HDMI convertor will not carry sound, you'd have to use a native HDMI output to a proper HDMI input on your display. I believe there are devices that will take a DVI input and a sound input from elsewhere and output them to a HDMI cable though.

You'll have to use a separate audio jack to gain any sound. Pure_MageUK is correct in saying that there are two-in-one devices that allow inputs of DVI/VGA and audio which is then converted into HDMI, giving you both a digital/analog signal as well as audio.

I know ATI 4000 series cards offer this feature, but I don't have a clue about nVidia.

Looking at the box it doesn't have a sound processing power so you won't be able to output sound and audio on a normal HDMI adapter.

Noting the bit at the bottom of the 4850 saying 5.1 audio

i read in some other fourms that says some video cards can output hdmi signal through dvi with hdmi adapter.

They can output the HDMI signal, but not with sound. DVI does NOT carry sound, an adapter can't magically generate the sound to go with the HDMI output it's giving. As I said, the only way to get a full HDMI output (with sound) from DVI is to purchase a device which takes a DVI input and a seperate sound input and combines them to a HDMI output.
