Upgrading my graphics card and RAM

Featured Replies

Well I am an extreme gamer and my onboard crappy graphics card is fast but holding me back. I have $400(USD) to spend on my graphics card. I also prefer NVidia cards.

The last one is the new 7800 card from Nvidia but it's $400 as the 6800 card, how is that? There are some more cards on bestbuy and compusa that are $450, they probily are better. If I should buy one for a ltitle higher, I just have to wait a week.

I am also only using 512mb of ram. I want to add another stick of 512 in here. The only thing this computer came with PC2700 ram :( . So should I buy 2 512 stick with PC 3200 ram? How much difference is pc2700 to pc3200?

Thank you for your help. If you have better cards to choose from, or better links just post them :D . I am not installing these myself so don't worry that I would mess something up  .

I forgot to add. I have 1 AGP slot and 2 free PCI slots.

I also have over 400w power supply so power is not an issue.

Go ahead and spend the few extra bucks and get the GeForce 7800 GT OC PCI card, it will be well worth the money. The 6800 runs on an AGP slot where as the 7800 runs on PCI slot which is better in this case.

Now for the ram you have, I believe the PC2700 runs on 333Mhz and the PC3200 runs on 400Mhz. We're going to need to know what kind of motherboard you have so we can see what type of ram it can support.

Err, people. He most likely doesn't have PCI-Express slots if he has an AGP slot, he'll just have normal PCI slots. Ergo, suggesting a PCI-Express graphics card is a rather silly advice. He won't be able to use it that way.

I guess I only have the normal PCi slots. I thought they were all the same  .

PCI-express I hear is faster. I want a graphics card that will last a long time without buying another one soon. So is AGP slot slower? If not i'll get an AGP card. Which is my only option with this computer now.

If PCI-express is faster so should I just wait about 2 months and buy a PCI-express card with a new modo with PCI-express? If thats even worth it that is :? .

Here's the Geforce 6800 ultra card that is AGP/x8

How do I check my mobo to see what type it is? I know I have 2 slots for ram and can hold up to 2gb ( 1gb 2x).

i say wait a couple of months and save up more money to get a pci-express mobo.... agp is dead so u you may as well buy something and let is last you 2 more yrs than 6 months

Agreed. The best card your going to be getting on the nVidia side is a 6800 GT/Ultra, but your next computer won't be able to use it, so its an unwise purchase. You should just cope with what you have now and buy a whole new setup when you can afford it. If you want to still get RAM for now, get PC3200 (it will clock down to 2700), so that you will be able to use it on your next motherboard.

if you want future proofing, upgrade your motherboard and processor to be compliant with PCI-E motherboards, that way you can use faster cards, the actual PCI-E port itself is theoretically faster but the actual difference in performance is neglible

ok, i guess i am just going to wait. I will be buying 512mb of ram (pc3200) though.

Thank you for everyone's help.
