Laptop sound troubles.

Featured Replies

For the past few months I've been having trouble with the sound on my laptop. I would just open up my laptop and I would go on youtube and try to watch something and notice that the sound wasn't working..

I was getting this

Usually after restarting my laptop the sound would be back to normal so it was alright for then.

In the past few weeks this has been happening more and more often and I've had trouble getting the sound back on. Its been off all day today. I've tried to going to Control Pannel > Sound but all it says is "There are no audio devices installed". I don't know where to go from here..

I'm not really smart with computers and I'd appreciate if you guys could help me out. Thanks :)

What brand of laptop is it, I know I've recently had problems with my Sony VAIO.

Chances have it you might have Realtek HD Audio Speakers if it's a newer laptop - Realtek just recently updated their drivers for HD Audio laptop speakers.

It's a Toshiba, I think one in the Sattelite series but I'm not exactly sure which.

Also, after waking up today I turned my laptop on and the sound was back...

Edit: Just got back after I had lunch and my sound was working for a few minutes, then it suddenly turned off again... Urgh... -.-

Before you do anything, make sure that in "Volume Control", wave is set properly.

I know because it's happened to me a few times and it's really quite elusive.

Foremost. Is there a red X over your speaker icon ?

Ok, troubleshooting. Can you identify a time when it was working perfectly ?

Yes, then use system restore and see what differences.

Have you installed any new software recently ? Have you installed any hardware recently ?

Has your system crashed recently ?

What is your operating system ?

Does the sound only not work for music played from your computer, but does from CDs and online ?

Does music when played on Windows Media Player work ?

Have you applied any Microsoft [or any other] updates recently ?

Alright, after answering those questions.

Now, first step.

Control panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Hardware Tab

Are there any highlighted or with exclamation or question marks ?

Then,

Run > devmgmt.msc > Sounds, videos and game controllers.

Are there any drivers, codecs or devices that came from outside the actual manufacturer ?

Or, if you don't mess around go through the regular BIOS. I'm assuming it's the same as most other computers.

- Next time you log in, hit F1.

- Then hit F5. Select OK [or yes]

- Press the F10 key. Select Ok or yes to save your system's default settings.

- Exit the BIOS [safely] and when logged in check again for sound.

Remember 10 lines ago, going to the Device Manager ?

Go there again and reinstall all the drivers. All. Then enable and disable them.

Go to the manufacturers website and check for any driver updates that apply to your specific set.

If this all is ok, then it's a hardware problem. Probably your Volume Potentiometer. And it sounds like it

because of the sound suddenly changing.

The small round thing inside your computer. Exhibits itself on the outside as a grooved knob.

Take it to a professional.

Or if you don't wanna' shell out $50 and you're convinced it's not hardware - I really don't know what to do.

Answer those questions, and it'll help.
