Youmu
As previously mentioned in Mod Tom Ss blog back in July, we have been migrating all of our core systems, such as the login and friend systems, to a new hosting facility. The new facility offers greater redundancy and performance. We have almost completed the migration and only a few systems are still to be transferred. As discussed in the blog, the new hosting facility uses a Storage Area Network, or SAN, for data storage. The servers in the new facility use special fibre channel network cards (basically very fast network cards) to talk to the SAN. We have been alerted to a bug in the driver that runs the fibre channel network card. After discussion within the Systems Administration team and with Mod MMG, we have decided this bug warrants an immediate driver update. Unfortunately, to update the driver we have to restart the servers. This will necessitate some downtime on nearly all our systems. We are going to perform the majority of the updates today. We apologise for any disruption this may cause and will attempt to keep downtime to a minimum. RSBDavid
Is there really a need to post every little update on the front page? This is just about a bugged driver in one of the remote SAM's. Erm you under play it. Its a driver update they have to apply that requires them to restart ALL their servers. Which means EVERY single part of the game and site will have to go offline at some point Operation Gold Sparkles :: Chompy Kills :: Full Profound :: Champions :: Barbarian Notes :: Champions Tackle Box :: MA RewardsDragonkin Journals :: Ports Stories :: Elder Chronicles :: Boss Slayer :: Penance King :: Kal'gerion Titles :: Gold Statue
Omali
This topic is now about sharing your own experiences with server downtimes. I remember when Tip.It Forums went offline for that long time. I filled the void by playing Carmageddon...on the streets outside of my house.

Its featured, pretty major really considering most modules and game services will be down at some point today. Since when did Jagex have Surface to Air Missiles? Theres a difference between rebooting a server once in a while and having to rebott every single server enamss. If 2 serves run login one reboots while other works hard and vice versa. Update means both have to go offline to update and then reboot aka no login. Same applies to every other rs feature. Omali
I think Bballer's point is that there is no discussion value in this thread, other than the current topic "is there discussion value in this thread" in which case if you really need to ask, than the answer is no. Sonic just wanted to be the OP on a news story for once.
bored321
Yeah like paw_claw said, although they wont take down every server at the same time at some point the login server you are on will go down. Not to mention all the other services, friends/cc servers ect.. And then the site modules on top of that. Basically everything but the externally hosted game world servers (and a few of them are hosted in the same place, as they moved them recently). So its going to cause a lot of disruption, unlike the scheduled single server module updates/reboots. And if anything goes wrong, we have a topic to flame Jagex in. Thanks Gradeskip93 for my awesome sig!
Wkw
Oh no! Their SAM sites are down?! What will happen if the RWTers attempt top sent an areial bombardment to Cambridge?! They will be left defenseless! Wait, I think new satalite reports say that they have Cambridge covered with Divine Spirit Shields and they've replaced their water system with prayer potion.., So they will be able to negate at least 30% of the nuclear blast... Oh well, let the building eat the game devs. They have to be better then shark, right? :P Runescape player since 2005 Ego Sum Deus Quo Malum Caligo et Barathum
