Graphics Card for current gaming?

Featured Replies

Thought I'd take chirstmas as an opportunity to upgrade my graphics and get some new games...

What would be substantial to play newer games on? Dragon Age, CoD etc. I'm running AMD Athlon X2 6400+ with 3gb Ram (4 installed, 3 active with XP.) I'm on 256mb graphics at the moment but it can't hack newer games, so I'm looking at the new Nvidia series of graphics cards - most notably a 1gb card.

Can be PCI-E but PCI is fine too.

It can't be PCI. PCI is too slow for the bandwidth needed.

It depends on: Watts and amps on your psu (+ brand), price, enough space in the case. 1gb will only be usefull if you got a fast enough graphics card and a big resolution.

Any online dealers you got links to?

I'm happy to order from Ebuyer, Overclockers.co.uk etc.

I'm running a 19" single but might be upgrading to dual screen so will need to accomodate that...

500w PSU (brand new today, hahah) calculated I'm currently running just under 400 so no probs there. "High Power Plus" from PC World (I figured they have warranty and returns, in case the problem I was fixing wasn't PSU based. :D

Prefer to spend as little as possible, but I won't spend over 100 quid. Running at 1280 x 1024

You also don't really need 1GB of on-board unless you're playing something with really intense textures (ie. Crysis) so 512 should be more than enough.

I highly recommend the ATI 5870 or the nVidia 9800 GT. Both phenomenal cards and are probably the best bang for your buck on today's market. If you're really penny pinching, the 8800GT is still a beast and can still hold a candle to Crysis at highish settings. If you're willing to fork out more, nVidia 285 GTX.

Better yea you should get a hold of an ATI 4850, off www.newegg.com, it is fast then the 9800GT suggested and is less pricey. I believe you could huck one for about 100$, and it will handle all the major games right now (except for really intense, the highest resolution settings - but that's not much to worry about). Also newegg has one of the best customer services and delivery service, check it out!
