If you have more than one pet in your menagerie and have one of them following you at the time, it probably points to which one is following you.

*points to war tortoise* the raven wasnt following me either, it was just mucking about

It needs feeding or a glitch - I had an arrow pointing to barrows from the shortcut cave before. :P
