It depends on how often the item is traded as well as a few other things. So its pretty much random.

So what your saying is every item's price can change randomly and separately?

No, they all change at the same time, but that time varies depending on how many items are traded and other factors.

I doubt that it's that complicated. I don't have any proof, but it seems to me that it's a manual process that someone at Jagex kicks off whenever they remember to do it, or have the time to get around to it.

 

So I guess it depends as much on if the "GE update guy" gets stuck in traffic on the way back from lunch as anything else.

Whenever the market trades slowly (i.e. most items are crashing or most are bought out) updates are further apart.
