Constant Internet Disconnections

This is really pissing me off. I get constant internet disconnections, sometimes once an hour, sometimes two in 10 minutes, and even sometimes with absolutely none.

I have no idea if it's my router or Charter, or what.

I am also running vista 64 bit. But the disconnections will also happen if my brother is on xbox live and to my brothers computer as well.

They are all plugged into a wired LINKSYS WRT310N router.

Any ideas?

Edit: No idea if this helps at all, but when I get disconnected it still says local only and when I try to repair the error is, "Cannot connect to DNS server."

I have a 2wire modem, and this just started happening to me as well. Do you happen to have AT&T?

I notice that it happens in the mornings and at nighttime the most. It will happen continuously for like 5 hours (constant disconnects/reconnects). I know that I'm not being DDoS'd.

Likewise, it just started happening. It didn't do this a couple months ago. It is also becoming more frequent. I remember about 4 months ago I had to call Customer Support because the Internet wouldn't work at all. They told me that I needed a new modem and that they were "100% sure". After spending $100 at a local AT&T store purchasing a new modem and opening it (thus not being able to return it, I think), I found, much to my chagrin, that I only had to replace the wires connecting the computer to the modem. The other modem was useless, although I decided to keep it incase something actually happened to my current modem.

It also seems to only happen to my computer (although the modem wire issue affected all computers in the house); the other computers seem to work fine, but my computer loses signal and says "local area only" or just disconnects. It might be a problem with my/your BlueTooth.

EDIT: This is all wireless, by the way. All of the computers in my household are laptops.

My computers are wired. Also I have charter as my ISP.

It happens to all my computers as well, including the xbox, so Im thinking it might be something wrong with Charter.

Just trying to get any other ideas.

I've had issues with a Linksys router too. After switching to a D-Link about a year ago, I rarely disconnect.

Yup, I too had the same problem with Linksys routers. Lost connections and overheating issues that eventually scorched the resting place where my router was. I found that resetting the router (through the web interface) helped with the former. Perhaps some ice for the latter? ;) It was the same router that you have as well.

Take a look here. Read the first six reviews:

Check out linksys's forums and you'll see all the problems people are having with this router. Appears to be a firmware issue but the connection keeps dropping requiring a power down of the router. Can't believe cnet didnt experience this in their review!

The product is fast as billed, but it drops connection 2 or 3 times a day, requiring the router to be unplugged and plugged back in.

The firmware in this router is bad. It has many bugs that need to be fixed. The worst one is that the router freezes randomly and you connection drops. At this point, the only way to recover is to power cycle the device. This firmware problem has been confirmed by Linksys Tech Support.

My guess is the router, unfortunately.

This never used to happen before, it just recently started to happen.

I dont have to power cycle my router for the connection to come back, it just happens automatically.

I thought it was better because I didnt disconnect at all last night, but I just disconnected like 5 minutes ago. :wall:

I'm still wondering if it is a charter thing, especially since you're d/c'ing during what would be "prime time".

I'd be tempted to say it's Charter. Their internet is garbage, these disconnects are starting to piss me off too.

I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal.

Is there anyway to make 100% sure its my router?

I dont have another router to use and the internet wont work at all if I plug directly into the modem.

Could a slightly outdated firmware cause this? I didnt realize there was a new (kinda) firmware for my router.

These are the fix notes.

1. Fixed problem with enabling and disabling wireless.

2. Updated Home Network Defender support

3. Fixed single port forwarding issue.

4. Fixed DHCP server issue when disabled and then enabled again.

5. Updated with Network Magic support

6. Fixed Management pages that goes to different URL when save settings.

7. Fixed issue with NMH products

8. Fixed HNAP issue

9. Updated chipset software

10. Disabled WMM by default.

Would #4 have been the problem?

(Hasnt been enough time to tell if it's worked yet.)

Edit: Apparently it didn't work. >_>
