Well I am redoing the computers around my house and I already have a good laptop picked out for myself. I need a laptop for my mom now. All she needs it for is running quick books pro 2005 (and maybe the latest one) and minimal browsing, along with avast free AV. I would like:

• Integrated or discrete gfx to keep costs down
  
• Core 2 duo/i3 see above
  
• 320gb hdd
  
• long lasting battery (probably the most important)
  
• low price

She is very computer illiterate, so

• Big roomy keyboard with numpad and option to turn off touchpad
  
• Around 15" screen
  

 

I will setup the computer for her (set up software/delete crapware) and then she will use it. Also please try to get it at like best buy or something (NOT newegg the cheapest laptop there is wayyyy too high spec/expensive for what I am considering).

320gb harddrive on a laptop for your mom? wtf will she be downloading? <_<

 

I have a toshiba satellite l305-s5875 which was about $500 when it was new. New models will have more features for the same price so that is what i would recommend. (you can see their specs on the buy page because they have most likely changed from my current one.)

 

Stay away from dell.

We had a Dell once. It was a POS. My dad has a Sony laptop, and he loves it. But idk about pricing.

What, you want a long battery life, huge monitor, and huge keyboard?

Is 15" really that big? I've seen a 17.5" laptop that lasted ages w/o recharge. Also the battery is the least of my concerns.

True, on my 17" laptop the battery life is ~3 hours.
