Improving my internet for RS.

Youmu

Recommended Posts

When playing RS, my regular internet connection is really crappy as it keeps lagging out every 15 mins or so, disabling the ability to do any kind of activity efficiently (dung). Some are even impossible for me (every activity, basically).

So I recently downloaded this new VPN server for my computer. When I activate it, the speed of my internet has definitely improved for most other sites, so it's faster browsing.

However, when I play RS, guess what? It STILL uses the old IP address that lags out every 15 mins!

Any idea how I can modify RS to make it connect to my VPN server instead of my regular internet IP? I'm thinking of deleting the cache, but it might be too much hassle...

Any kind of feedback is appreciated! (If it belongs to tech & computers, sorry, please move it if that's the case.)

I'm unsure how to do what your asking, i would have to fiddle with it myself, but has your computer always had chronic lag? If it hasn't what i find the best thing to do is to re-format the computer if you have the resources (installation disk, external drive, time etc). It always fixes all viruses/lag problems for me :)

Yeah I always had chronic lag, but only in Runescape. (As in, click on something, doesn't respond, 20sec later I'm in the lobby)

What I'm saying, is there a way to configure RS so that it connects to the IP address I want to connect to? I figured that it's the internet connection that's causing the problem, not the computer itself.

Do you use a router? If you do it can be a damaged router that loses connection.

I'm using a router, but not wireless connection itself.

I've used a different VPN before and never experienced loss, but now that option is tossed out the window I'm back to lagging out every 20mins. I'm certain the problem is not my router.

I thought VPN was just to remote access a network (for business purposes and such). How would it increase your speed?...

It can't. Whether he is using a VPN or not using one he is still going over the same connection.

More likely the router is still the culprit. It sees VPN traffic and passes it just fine, but isn't passing other traffic fine.

A very, very unlikely scenario is that the route from his home to the Runescape server is less efficient than the route from his home to his vpn server to the Runescape server. The data should be transferred through one of the most efficient routes though, and if it isn't the most efficient then the difference is usually negligible.

Just for curiosity, what kind of internet service do you use?

How does your internet hold up on speedtest?

On my vpn thing:

Download: 0.7 mb/s

Upload: 3.89 mb/s

Ping: 254 ms

Regular:

Download: 5.41 mb/s

Upload: 0.44 mb/s

Ping: 61 ms

I used hotspot shield and when playing rs it actually used THAT ip address instead of my home one. However it doesn't do that anymore so back to the start...

Now I use a different program but that doesn't work either.

My ISP for regular is Chinanet Guangdong Province, and the ISP for my other is Hurricane Electric.

And actually when playing Runescape my ping is just fine for both regular and my VPN program, there's little difference. What IS different though is when I play Runescape on the regular Chinanet, it lags out quite a lot... while I experience NO lagout when my VPN connects. Even the IP address displayed in the lobby is shown differently too.

But for some reason, right now even with the VPN activated (with a different ISP), it still uses Chinanet. Don't ask me why this suddenly happened :\

Aren't VPNs illegal in china?

A lot of companies use them though, so they're not.

Regular China internet for me is killer for RS, which is why I'm even bringing up this topic in the first place.

If there is a VPN program that actually makes RS connect to a different ip address (displayed in the lobby), that would be great.

Well, today I managed to download another one of those VPN things, and things are in fact going smooth. No more lagouts for me (for now).
