So After getting a message from my ip claiming how there internet is the fast and all this crud like you know a commercial ad i thought id test it out.

I went to there website and ran a speed test these are the results.

Download speed 0.75 mbps

Upoload speed 0.12 mbps

PIng 20ms

i went to another site to test again and got the same results except for a smaller ping.

But according to this website i was like WAY BELOW what the average people get for the same ip provider.

My question(s) are.

How good is my results?

How can i improve speed?

realistically how much could i possible improve speed?

I have this computer since maybe 2004. it runs windows xp.

The modem i have is one issued from the ip provider its proabley out of date.

What annoys me is that i go to my friends house and she streams without like no wait. like we watch a tv show online and theres maybe 1min of loading and thats it.

she has att

where on my part if i run the same clip i would have to pause the video for maybe 5mins so it can load a good portion then watch that portion while the other portion loads.

I play online as well that i really have no complaints about. that. obviously i cant be a host of a game beacuse of this.

But i cant even watch 480p or 720p on youtube it would take forever to see a 3min clip

Help :(

Edit: I use firefox

Go to the ISP's website (should be easy enough to find). Look for what the specs are on the basic package. Download speed, upload speed, and monthly bandwidth.

Calling your ISP to double check what package you have wouldn't hurt either. The reason I ask is because if you have a really basic package those slow speeds may be all you pay for. If that's the case, your best bet may be to look at upgrading your connection.

this. Your speed is quite slow, and the only practical way to increase that speed is to buy a better package from your ISP.

Is it DSL?

I work at an ISP as an Internet Technician, and we just did an audit of the DSL customers we have that have a different billing speed than listed in the info database, whether it be higher or lower, as well as people on speed packages we don't offer anymore. There were at least 50 on a 1m/256k profile that have never called in to complain about slow speeds, even though they were paying for 3m/768k. There were even two people that were getting 256k/128k that never called in to complain...

If you've been a customer for that long it is fairly likely you are being billed and getting a speed package that doesn't exist anymore. I'm currently getting 3m/768k from another provider here and that package doesn't exist on their site anymore, lowest is 5m/1m. I haven't gotten around to changing it yet because it would change my bill, and while I would end up with the same cost for internet ($45/month, $40 for 3/768 + $5 for static IP or $35 for 5/1 + $10 for static IP), I don't know what kind of phone bill I would end up with (just need to call CS and figure it out when I get a chance).

So yeah, call your provider, there is a chance they could do something for you.

Not sure how DSL works in the USA but in the UK your actual throughput is dependent on a number of factors; distance from the exchange, ISP's traffic management policies, contention and time of day. I pay for 6.5Mbps down, 1Mbps up and I usually get between 4-6 down and 0.7 up.

The best thing to do has already been advised and that is to check with your ISP about your plan / whether you are getting the correct speeds.
