December 20, 200520 yr I originally purchased this in 2003, shortly after its release. I played the demo and it looked alright, and at the time I was looking for an RTS to play other than Empire Earth. Unfortunately, it didn't work; it was one of the games that gave me the infamous BSOD (or some similar error), which ended up messing my computer permanently. I had to take it back. I've been recently downloading a bunch of demos, and this was one I came across. For a game made in 2003, and with competitors like Warcraft 3 and the Total War series, it's pretty damn good. I think it was the first to add this element of realism with restrictions that such as city limits, food limits and whatnot, which added a new level of skill required to succeed at the game (as opposed to just massing Elite Unique units on AOE2). I also downloaded a trial of the expansion, which I'll play afterwards to be able to appreciate the difference between the original. I think I'm gonna get the Gold Edition, as it's really promising and I get the impression it's the type of game that will still be widely played on the internet for years to come. It's successor, Rise of Legends, is coming out in February 2006 I believe, but I think I'll wait for the prices to drop. Anyone else have this game or have any recommendations (sp?) for similar RTS games which apply the whole government/city element?
December 20, 200520 yr I got every AOE game to date and they are well worth it. The first AOE is still played online on the Zone quite a bit. You can't go wrong with it. Differences between gameplay in the versions is fairly small, the big kicker is the AI. And if you want to play online, you really need to be good with the keyboard shortcuts. --- The C&C / RA games are fairly good and can prove to be quite the challenge in more ways than one. It's not so big on the 'government/city' thing and it has no population cap but you really can get into it rather well. It is probably one of those few "RTS" in which 'flooding' doesn't always work as you expect :P
