Grogthurk
I'm sick as hell and can't really think for myself on this one. I also rarely throw in the towel, so please, understand my desperation. My parent's computer is hardly a year old (if it is) and will randomly power-off. The dust-build-up isn't bad -- i'm getting an air duster to take care of it too. The only part that gets hot, or even warm, is the heat sink. It's a gateway, and the model number is escaping me atm. Any initial ideas? I doubt it is the powersupply.
Guy
Is it regularly at the same time every day? Or is it every hour/whatever or is just random? Have you got any software installed that automatically turns it off? Not like a virus I mean, just a utility. Have a browse through some programs. That is if it's at a regular time every day. Unlikely, I know. If it's at random times, it might just be the power (not the PSU, the actual plug). Unplug the computer, then plug into a different socket. Perhaps also unplug the motherboard power supply and then plug it in again, it may be a loose connection. Have you noticed other things turning off at the same time? That will help determine whether its hardware or software, or a power supply (mains) issue. GlowinRedM
^ a note on this, I've had a similar experience and it turned out that it was a shotty outlet, so if you cant find a problem with the comp look at that too The corp beast, is, well, just a corp beast. Grogthurk
I think it is the power supply because it will not power on anymore. Oh well.
OldJoe
Motherboard or psu sounds likely. If it's still under warranty with gateway, send it in. Funph
I think it is the power supply because it will not power on anymore. Oh well. That can be it, I've had some of my computer's run into this problem which ended up being the power supply. It could also be your CPU you did say your heat sink get's hot/warm maybe it's thermal paste is a goner, which is causing it to overheat.Once a CPU start over heating your computer will shut down so it will not fry the system down. When it was on, an they used it did it shut down when they used something that loaded the process? Such as streaming video's? Running certain programs?
